The seventh-generation Mustang (the S650, sold since the 2024 model year) is a heavy, fast car, and it eats brakes faster than a commuter sedan. That's normal. What surprises a lot of owners is the bill, because the bigger brake packages use parts that cost more than you'd expect. Here's how the numbers break down and how to keep them sane.
What a brake job costs on a 2024-2026 Mustang
| Job | Who does it | Typical price | Source / notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake pad replacement (one axle) | Independent shop | $569 to $626 | RepairPal, 2024 Mustang |
| Brake pad replacement, all Mustang years | Independent shop | $243 to $338 | RepairPal headline range, older cars pull it down |
| Front pads only, Brembo 6-piston (GT/Dark Horse) | DIY parts | about $275 | Ford PR3Z-2001-C, CJ Pony Parts |
| Front rotors, pair, Brembo 6-piston | DIY parts | about $400 | Ford PR3Z-1125-C, CJ Pony Parts |
| Brake master cylinder | Independent shop | $507 to $654 | RepairPal, all Mustangs |
| Recall 23V800 or 24V496 | Ford dealer | $0 | Only on affected 2024 cars |
Parts prices were listed by CJ Pony Parts in October 2026 and change often. A dealer will usually charge more than RepairPal's independent-shop range, mostly because of labor rates.
Why S650 brakes cost more than you'd think
Two things drive the price. First, GT and Dark Horse cars equipped with the six-piston Brembo front brakes use big, performance-grade pads and rotors. Second, the rear brakes on the 2024+ car use an electronic parking brake. You can't just crank the rear pistons back with a cheap tool. The car has to go into a brake service mode first, which owners on the Mustang7G forum describe as a specific sequence using accessory mode, the accelerator and the parking brake switch. A shop with a scan tool does this in a minute. A DIYer who skips it can damage the parking brake actuator.
How to tell what your Mustang actually needs
- High-pitched squeal when braking: usually the built-in wear indicator. Pads are getting thin. Book it soon.
- Grinding or metal-on-metal noise: the pad is gone and the backing plate is chewing the rotor. Now you're buying rotors too.
- Shaking in the steering wheel when braking from speed: often uneven rotor deposits or a warped rotor. Common after hard track or canyon use.
- Brake fluid warning light that won't go away on a 2024: check recall 24V496 before assuming the fluid is low. Then check the fluid level anyway.
- Brake pedal feels loose or wobbly: stop driving and check recall 23V800.
RepairPal notes that pads are replaced in pairs and rotors should always be inspected, and that new pads need gentle braking for the first 40 to 50 miles to bed in. Skip the bedding and you can end up with a vibration that feels like a warped rotor.
The two 2024 Mustang brake recalls
Recall 23V800 (Ford 23S61): on 66 early 2024 Mustangs built at Flat Rock between June 7 and October 25, 2023, the brake pedal pivot tube may not have been flared properly, so the pedal could come loose. Dealers inspect and replace the pedal and bracket for free. Ford told owners not to drive affected cars until the inspection is done.
Recall 24V496 (Ford 24S43): a body control module software update left the brake fluid level sensor misconfigured on a small number of 2024 cars built between October 2022 and February 2024. The warning light could stay on, so an owner might ignore a real low-fluid problem. The dealer updates the BCM software for free.
Both affected very few cars, but a VIN check at nhtsa.gov/recalls takes 30 seconds and costs nothing.
DIY or shop?
Front pads on a Mustang are a reasonable DIY job if you have jack stands, a torque wrench and a caliper piston tool, and you follow the bedding procedure. The rears are trickier because of the electronic parking brake service mode. If you don't have a way to put the car in service mode (or a scan tool that can retract the pistons), let a shop do the rears.
Track days change the math. If you're running the car hard on a road course, budget for pads and fluid much more often, and consider a higher-temperature brake fluid. Street driving on factory pads is a different world.
What to ask the shop before you pay
- "Are you quoting Ford (Motorcraft or Brembo) pads or aftermarket?"
- "Do the rotors actually need replacing, or are they within spec?"
- "Is the electronic parking brake service mode included in the labor?"
- "Have you checked recalls 23V800 and 24V496 on my VIN?"
- "Will you flush the brake fluid, and is that included or extra?"
Is it worth fixing?
Always. Brakes aren't a repair-or-sell question on a car this new. The real decision is OEM versus aftermarket parts and dealer versus independent shop. For a daily-driven GT, an independent shop using quality pads is usually the best value. For a car that sees track time, spend the money on proper pads and fresh fluid.
