If your Mustang's rear tires look bald while the fronts still have plenty of tread, the car isn't broken. It's a rear-wheel-drive car with a lot of torque, and on a staggered setup the rears also can't be rotated forward. Here's what that means for your wallet.

Which tire sizes your Mustang has

Tire sizes on the seventh-generation Mustang (2024 and later) depend heavily on trim and packages. Tirepressure.com's 2024 listing shows sizes from 17-inch tires on some EcoBoost cars up to 19 and 20-inch setups on the GT, and a much wider 305/30R19 front and 315/30R19 rear option on the Dark Horse. Tiresize.com lists the 2024 GT Performance Package at 255/40R19 front and 275/40R19 rear.

Before you shop, read the sidewalls or the tire placard on the driver's door jamb. Ordering the wrong size is the most expensive way to buy tires.

Prices are Tire Rack listings checked in October 2026 and move constantly. Add mounting, balancing, new valve stems or TPMS service, and disposal at whatever shop installs them. RepairPal lists a 2024 Mustang tire rotation at $49 to $72 and a wheel alignment at $195 to $286.

Why the rear tires wear out first

  • Rear-wheel drive: the rears put down all the power. Hard launches and spirited driving scrub tread off fast.
  • No front-to-rear rotation: Discount Tire points out that with different sizes front and rear, you usually can't rotate front to back. Side to side is sometimes possible if the tires aren't directional.
  • Soft summer compounds: max-performance summer tires grip hard and wear faster than touring all-seasons. That's the trade.
  • Alignment: aggressive factory camber on performance cars can wear the inside edges. If one edge is going faster than the other, get an alignment check.

The warranty trap with staggered tires

Read the treadwear warranty before you buy. Tire Rack's listing for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S shows a 30,000-mile treadwear warranty with half mileage for the rears when they're a different size than the fronts. SlashGear reports that Michelin, Falken and Bridgestone are among the brands with this kind of staggered-fitment clause. So a "30,000-mile" tire may only be warrantied for 15,000 miles on the back of your Mustang.

The cold-weather rule most owners miss

If your Mustang came on summer tires, don't drive it on them in winter. Tire Rack's Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) listing says Pirelli's warranty does not cover compound cracking from use below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and that summer tires shouldn't be serviced, stored or driven in near-freezing temperatures, snow or ice. Tire Rack's Michelin Pilot Sport 4S listing carries the same warning, and notes cold-related cracking isn't covered.

Easy things to do before you buy

  • Check pressures cold, monthly. Use the door jamb numbers, not the max on the sidewall.
  • Look at the wear pattern. Center wear means overinflation. Both edges means underinflation. One edge means alignment.
  • Rotate side to side if your tires aren't directional and the shop says it's allowed for your setup.
  • Replace in axle pairs. On a staggered car you'll often buy rears twice for every set of fronts.
  • Check for a TPMS sensor problem if the warning light stays on after you set pressures.

What to ask the tire shop

  • "Is this the exact size and load/speed rating on my door placard?"
  • "What does the treadwear warranty say about staggered fitment?"
  • "Is mounting, balancing, valve service and disposal included?"
  • "Can you do a side-to-side rotation on this tire?"
  • "Do I need an alignment, and can you show me the readings?"

Is it worth it?

Tires on a Mustang aren't optional. They're the only thing between a V8 (or a turbo four) and the road. The smart money is matching the tire to how you actually drive. Mostly commuting in a place with real winters? An ultra-high-performance all-season can save money and stress. Weekend fun car in a warm climate? The summer tires are worth the price, just budget for rears more often.
