The third-generation HR-V arrived for 2023 with a 2.0-liter four and automatic climate control on every trim. It's a solid little SUV. But Honda's own dealer communications show its engineers are paying close attention to AC compressors on the newest ones.

What Honda is looking into

Honda's Technical Information & Support team sent dealers several requests, published on NHTSA's site:

  • October 2025: "Request for Parts: 2024-2026 Civic, CR-V, HR-V A/C Compressor Seizure." Symptom: AC not blowing cold, technician finds the compressor seized. Cause: not yet determined. Dealers were asked not to repair it yet and to contact Honda for parts collection.
  • January, March and July 2026: "Request for visit" notices on the same issue, covering all HR-V trims for 2024-2026. Honda wanted to inspect vehicles in person, with no prior HVAC repairs, no collision history, and no refrigerant leaks found by a leak detector.

These are engineering investigations, not recalls. They don't promise anyone a free fix beyond normal warranty. But if your HR-V's compressor seized, it's worth telling the dealer, because Honda clearly wants to know.

Other reasons an HR-V blows warm

SymptomPossible cause
AC suddenly stops, maybe a noise firstCompressor or clutch failure
Cool air slowly gets weaker over weeksRefrigerant leak (condenser, lines, O-rings)
No air coming out at allBlower motor, resistor or fuse
Cold on one side, warmer on the otherBlend door or climate control issue
Driver's heater vent cooler than passenger'sHonda dealer messages on 2023-2024 HR-V heating (heat, not AC)
Weak airflow and musty smellClogged cabin air filter

Honda has a history of condenser leaks on other models. For example, its Service Bulletin 19-091 extended the AC condenser warranty to 10 years, unlimited miles on 2016-2021 Civics because of corrosion pinholes. That bulletin doesn't cover the HR-V, but it's a reminder to have a shop find the actual leak before swapping parts.

Easy things to try first

  • Swap the cabin air filter. Cheap, and a clogged one makes everything feel weaker.
  • Check the fuses in the owner's manual if nothing blows at all.
  • Look at the condenser through the grille. Leaves and bugs block airflow.
  • Listen with the AC on. A loud grinding or squeal from the engine bay is a compressor clue. Shut the AC off and book a visit.
  • Note the details. When did it start? Any noise? Did it fail suddenly or fade? Dealers fix faster with good notes.

A note on the RepairPal compressor page: its headline figure for a 2024 HR-V repeats the condenser range, so we've listed the clearly labeled 2026 and 2016-2017 compressor estimates instead. Get a written quote for your exact year.

Recalls to check while you're there

NHTSA recall 24V-744 covers about 1.69 million Hondas and Acuras, including the 2023-2025 HR-V, for a steering gearbox that can cause heavy steering. Dealers replace a spring and re-grease the gearbox for free. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Is the compressor seized, or is there a leak? Did you use a leak detector?"
  • "Does Honda's compressor seizure request apply to my VIN?"
  • "Is this covered under my new-vehicle warranty?"
  • "Can I get the diagnosis and parts list in writing?"

Is it worth fixing?

On a 2024-2026 HR-V, the AC should be fixed under warranty, so go to a Honda dealer first. On an older one, a recharge or condenser is well worth it. Even a compressor is a fair trade for a cool, comfortable car you plan to keep.
