Brakes are the one repair you don't want to negotiate with. The good news is that pads on a small SUV like the HR-V are a routine, fairly cheap job. The trick is catching them before they chew up the rotors.

What the 2023+ HR-V has

Honda's 2023 HR-V spec sheet lists power-assisted ventilated front discs (12.3 in) and solid rear discs (12.2 in) on every trim, plus an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold. That's a good setup for a car this size. It also means the rear calipers have a motor on them, which changes how pads get replaced.

Signs your pads are done

RepairPal lists the classic signs:

  • Squealing. Many pads have a small metal tab that touches the rotor when the pad gets thin. It's designed to annoy you.
  • Grinding. The pad's metal backing is rubbing the rotor. Now you're damaging rotors, which costs more.
  • Thin pads you can see. Look through the wheel spokes at the caliper. Very little pad material left is your answer.
  • Brake warning light, on vehicles with a pad wear sensor.

Other symptoms point somewhere else. A pulsing pedal or steering wheel shake when stopping usually means warped or uneven rotors. A pull to one side can be a sticking caliper. A soft or sinking pedal is a hydraulic issue. Don't drive on that one.

RotorsAsk for a quoteOften resurfaced or replaced with pads

Pads are replaced in pairs (both front wheels or both rear wheels). The shop should inspect the rotors and either resurface or replace them if they're scored or too thin. Ask whether rotors are included in the quote. That's where prices jump.

The electric parking brake catch

On older cars, replacing rear pads meant pushing the caliper piston back with a tool. On cars with an electric parking brake like the 2023+ HR-V, the parking brake motor has to be put into maintenance mode first, usually with a scan tool or a specific procedure in the service information. Forcing the piston back without doing that can damage the caliper motor.

"My HR-V braked by itself"

This isn't a pad problem, but it shows up a lot in HR-V brake complaints. NHTSA's database for the 2023-2025 HR-V includes owner reports of the Collision Mitigation Braking System braking hard with nothing in front of the car, sometimes with "Brake" flashing on the dash, plus "Collision Mitigation Braking System Problem - See Your Dealer" warnings. These are individual owner reports, not a recall. If it happens to you:

  • Note the date, time, speed, road and weather.
  • Keep the windshield clean in front of the camera and the front sensor area clear.
  • Report it to the dealer and file a complaint at nhtsa.gov. Patterns get investigated when owners report them.

Recall to check

NHTSA recall 24V-744 covers the 2023-2025 HR-V (and many other Hondas) for a steering gearbox that may have too much internal friction, making steering heavy. Dealers replace a spring and re-grease it for free. Owner letters went out November 18, 2024.

How long do HR-V pads last?

It depends on how you drive. RepairPal notes city driving, mountain roads and hard stops wear pads faster. Your owner's manual and Honda's Maintenance Minder will tell you when to inspect them. After new pads go on, brake gently for the first 40 to 50 miles so they bed in.

What to ask the shop

  • "Front, rear, or both? How much pad is left on each?"
  • "Are the rotors being resurfaced or replaced, and is that in the price?"
  • "Do you put the electric parking brake in service mode for rear pads?"
  • "Are you using OEM or quality aftermarket pads?"
  • "Is the brake fluid due?"

Is it worth fixing?

Always. Brakes aren't optional, and a pad job at a few hundred dollars is one of the cheapest ways to keep an HR-V safe. Just don't let it go to grinding, because that's when a pad job turns into a pads-and-rotors job.
