The 12 mini has a 5.4-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display with a Ceramic Shield front. Ceramic Shield is tougher than the old glass, but it's still glass. Drop it on a corner on concrete and it'll crack. The good news: screen repair on this phone is fairly cheap compared with the bigger models.

Your three screen options
| Screen type | Typical installed price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Aftermarket LCD (incell) | $60 to $100 | Cheapest. Dimmer, thicker borders, no true blacks, uses more battery |
| Aftermarket OLED | $100 to $170 | Close to the original look with true blacks. Colors and brightness can differ slightly |
| Genuine Apple | $229 at Apple | Original quality, all features, Apple repair warranty |
Here's the thing about LCDs on a 12 mini specifically: the phone already has a small battery. An LCD panel keeps its backlight on all the time, while OLED pixels turn off for black. So an LCD swap can make your battery life even shorter, on a phone where battery is already the weak spot. For a daily phone, go OLED or genuine.
What's actually broken?
- Cracked glass, picture fine, touch fine: a straightforward screen swap.
- Black spots, lines or a green tint: the OLED itself is damaged. Same repair, but it'll get worse, so don't put it off.
- Touch doesn't respond in one area: digitizer damage. Still a screen replacement.
- Black screen, phone still rings: could be the screen or its connector. A shop can test it quickly before quoting.
- Face ID stopped after the drop: mention it up front. That's a separate part near the top of the screen.
Parts and Service History and True Tone
The 12 mini keeps a record of its display in Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. A non-genuine screen will show as an Unknown Part. Apple says Unknown parts generally don't affect normal use, but they can lower trade-in value.
True Tone (the feature that warms up the screen in yellow light) often stops working on a non-genuine screen unless the shop transfers it from your old display. Ask if they do that.
Things to do right away
- Put tape or a cheap screen protector over the crack to stop glass slivers.
- Back up the phone now, while you can still see the screen.
- If ghost touches start, lock the phone when it's in your pocket.
Apple or a shop?
Apple ($229) if you have AppleCare+ ($29), plan to sell or trade it in, or want the original screen quality.
Shop OLED ($100 to $170) if you're keeping the phone a couple more years. It looks close to stock and costs less.
Shop LCD ($60 to $100) only for a spare phone. On the 12 mini, it's not worth the hit to battery life.
Worth it?
Yes, in most cases. The 12 mini runs iOS 27 and a screen repair is one of the cheaper fixes on it. If the battery is also worn out, do both at once and save yourself a second trip. See our 12 mini battery guide for that. All prices are on the iPhone 12 mini repair page.
