The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch OLED screen, a titanium frame and a price tag that makes a crack feel personal. The good news: you have options, and the gap between them is big enough to matter. The bad news: the cheapest one is cheap for a reason.
What Apple charges for an iPhone 16 Pro
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked screen | $329 | $29 |
| Screen and back glass | $419 | $29 each (screen and back) |
| Back glass only | $159 | $29 |
| Rear camera | $249 | Not listed separately |
| Battery | $119 | $0 under 80% health |
| Other damage | $729 | $99 |
Those are Apple's US out-of-warranty prices before tax. Apple checks the phone first, and the quote can change if there's damage beyond the screen.
The three screen options, side by side
| Screen | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Aftermarket LCD | $80 – $140 | Cheapest. Thicker borders, grayish blacks, more battery drain |
| Aftermarket OLED | $150 – $250 | Close to the original with true blacks. Color and brightness can be slightly off |
| Genuine Apple | $329 at Apple | The original screen quality, plus Apple's repair warranty |
Picture this. You paid Pro money for a Pro screen. An LCD on an iPhone 16 Pro is a bit like putting economy tires on a sports car. It rolls, but you'll notice. It's a fine pick if you're selling the phone next month. It's a weird pick if you're keeping it.
How to read the damage
- Cracked glass, picture fine, touch fine: it's cosmetic for now. Cracks spread, though, and they let dust and moisture in.
- Lines, green tint, black spots or flicker: the OLED panel is damaged. It won't heal.
- Dead spots or ghost touches: fix it soon. Phantom taps can open apps or dial people.
- Black screen but the phone rings and vibrates: usually the display, not the phone. If it has synced with your computer before, try backing it up there first.
Try this before you pay for anything
- Force restart: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
- Pull off the screen protector. Sometimes the protector is the only thing cracked, and it's the one doing the ghost touching.
- Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update if touch is acting odd after a drop.
The math: when Apple wins
Apple's genuine screen is $329. The top of the shop OLED range is $250. That's a $79 gap. If a shop quotes $240 for an aftermarket OLED, the extra money for genuine is probably worth it, especially on a phone this nice.
A good shop OLED in the $150 to $200 range is where you save real money, roughly $130 to $180. That's the honest middle ground for a lot of people.
What changes with a non-Apple screen
- Settings > General > About will show the display as an Unknown Part. That can lower trade-in value.
- True Tone has to be transferred from your old screen. Good shops do it. Ask.
- If a shop installs a genuine Apple screen, the phone may ask you to Finish Repair. That runs Apple's Repair Assistant from Settings > General > About > Parts & Service History, which calibrates the part. Until that's done, Face ID may not work for unlocking or payments.
Good to know about how it's built
iFixit's teardown found the iPhone 16 Pro opens from both the front and the back. Most of the big internal parts (battery, cameras, speakers) come out through the back glass, so a screen repair is mostly just the screen. That helps keep shop labor reasonable.
What to ask before paying
- Is it an LCD, aftermarket OLED, or genuine Apple screen? Get it on the receipt.
- What's the warranty on the screen, and does it cover touch issues and dead pixels?
- Will you transfer True Tone?
- Is that price the total, including tax?
- Can I test Face ID, the front camera and touch in every corner before I pay?
Is it worth fixing?
Absolutely. The iPhone 16 Pro is a 2024 flagship with years of updates left. If you have AppleCare+, it's $29 and you're done. Without it, go genuine at Apple if you're keeping the phone for a while or plan to trade it in. A quality shop OLED is a solid choice if you want to save over $100 and can live with the Unknown Part note.
