The camera is a big reason people buy a Pro Max. So when photos come out blurry, the lens rattles, or the app shows a black screen, it feels like the whole phone is broken. Sometimes it's a $249 repair. Sometimes it's a smudge. Let's find out which.

What Apple charges

RepairApple priceWith AppleCare+
Rear camera$249Other accidental damage is $99
Back glass$159$29
Screen$379$29
Other damage$899$99

Prices are US, before tax. Apple inspects the phone before giving a final price. If the drop that broke the camera also bent the frame, the job can move into the $899 "other damage" bucket.

Free fixes to try first

Apple's own camera checklist starts with the easy stuff. Test after each step:

  • 1. Take off the case and any lens attachments. Metal cases, magnetic lens mounts and clip-on lenses can mess with focus and stabilization.
  • 2. Clean the lenses. Use a microfiber cloth on the back lenses and the front camera. Pocket lint and fingerprints cause a lot of "blurry camera" complaints.
  • 3. Restart the phone.
  • 4. Update iOS.
  • 5. Test each camera. Switch between the lenses (0.5x, 1x, telephoto) and flip to the front camera. If only one lens is bad, that's useful info for the repair tech.
  • 6. Test the flash. Turn on the flashlight in Control Center.

Signs it really is broken

  • Rattling or buzzing from the camera bump when you open the Camera app.
  • Blurry at every distance on one lens, even after cleaning.
  • Black screen on one lens, while others work.
  • Shaky video that won't stabilize, or the image wobbles when the phone is still.
  • Cracked lens cover glass. Look in bright light at an angle.

Why the 18 Pro Max camera is different

The 18 Pro and Pro Max added a mechanical variable aperture to the main camera. iFixit's teardown found six super-thin blades, controlled by tiny electromagnets. One blade literally flew out during the teardown.

What that means for you: if the aperture gets stuck or damaged, it's not realistic to fix the blades. The fix is replacing the entire main camera assembly. The good news from the same teardown is that the camera modules are modular and fairly easy to swap. So it's a parts-cost repair, not a labor nightmare.

Protect the camera you've got

Apple warns that cameras with optical image stabilization and closed-loop autofocus can be damaged by long exposure to strong vibration, like a phone mounted directly on a high-power motorcycle's handlebars. If you ride, use a vibration-dampening mount, and don't leave the phone clamped to the frame. Same idea for scooters and mopeds.

Apple or a shop?

For the next while, Apple. Aftermarket camera parts for the 18 Pro Max are rare this early, and a pulled used module is a gamble. Questions to ask wherever you go:

  • Is this the full rear camera assembly, or only the lens cover glass?
  • Is it priced as rear camera ($249) or could it become other damage?
  • Will you test every lens, autofocus and stabilization before I leave?

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. $249 on a brand-new Pro Max is a fair fix, especially since the camera is the main reason to own this phone. If you have AppleCare+, ask about your coverage first. If the same drop cracked your screen, our iPhone 18 Pro Max screen replacement cost guide has those numbers.
