The 13-inch MacBook Air M4 has a 53.8 watt-hour battery that Apple rates for up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing. Those are big numbers, and a healthy M4 Air really does go all day. So if yours suddenly doesn't, it's worth figuring out why before you hand over $179.

How to check your battery

There are two places to look on the Mac:

  • System Settings > Battery: shows the battery condition. Normal is what you want. If it says Service Recommended, the battery is worn or has a problem.
  • Cycle count: hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then click Power under Hardware. The cycle count is listed under Battery Information.

Apple says the M4 MacBook Air (like the M2, M3 and M5 models) has a maximum of 1,000 cycles, and its battery is designed to keep up to 80% of its original capacity at that point. One cycle means using 100% of the battery's capacity in total, so using half today and half tomorrow is one cycle.

Easy things to try first

  • Activity Monitor > Energy tab: sort by Energy Impact. A runaway browser tab, a stuck sync app or a video call app left open can wreck battery life.
  • Lower screen brightness. The display is one of the biggest power users.
  • Quit apps you're not using instead of leaving them minimized all week.
  • Restart. A background process that went haywire after a macOS update is a very common cause of sudden drain.
  • Keep it cool. Using it on a bed or couch traps heat, and heat ages batteries.

Signs the battery really is the problem

  • Condition says Service Recommended.
  • Cycle count is near or over 1,000.
  • The Mac shuts off with 10% to 20% still showing.
  • The trackpad gets stiff, the bottom case bulges, or the laptop wobbles on a flat table. That can be a swollen battery. Stop using it on battery, shut it down and get it to Apple.

What the repair actually involves

Apple publishes the repair manual for this exact model, and it's not a quick swap. The bottom case comes off first, then the trackpad cable gets disconnected, and the battery is held to the top case by four adhesive strips with pull tabs that have to come out slowly without snapping. Apple's manual says "Don't remove the battery from the battery tray" and "Don't touch the middle of the battery." It also calls for special tools, including torque drivers, an alignment tool and a battery press, to seat the new battery.

Apple or an independent shop?

Apple ($179) gives you a genuine battery, a repair warranty and a condition that reads correctly afterward. With AppleCare+ and the battery under 80%, it's free.

An independent shop may be cheaper. Ask the questions below first, since a bad battery job on a MacBook Air can damage the trackpad cable or the case.

What to ask before you pay

  • Is it a genuine Apple battery or a third-party cell?
  • Will System Settings show the battery condition normally afterward?
  • Do you use new adhesive strips, or reuse the old ones?
  • What's the warranty?

Is it worth replacing?

Yes. The M4 Air is a 2025 laptop with years of life left, and $179 is a small fraction of a new one. If you've also had a spill, read our MacBook Air M4 liquid damage guide first, because liquid damage changes the whole quote.
