A Crosstrek is supposed to be the car you trust for the trailhead at 5 a.m. Not the one that clicks at you in the garage. If your battery has died more than once, you're in a big and well-documented club.
What owners report
NHTSA complaints for the Crosstrek read like the same story told dozens of times. Searching complaints for battery, drain or no-start problems turned up 28 hits for the 2019 Crosstrek alone, plus more for 2020 through 2023. A few examples:
- 2019 Crosstrek: "Battery is drained even when car is fully turned off." If not driven daily, the battery may drain completely.
- 2021 Crosstrek: The owner says the telematics unit (DCM) caused a parasitic drain, left them stranded several times, and they replaced the battery twice in 15 months.
- 2021 Crosstrek: A used buyer needed a new battery two days after purchase. The dealer later acknowledged a parasitic draw but didn't note the source.
- 2023 Crosstrek: "Replaced battery 3 times. Believe this car has the parasitic battery issue."
- 2023 Crosstrek: The car died at a red light in traffic and had to be pushed to the side.
The lawsuits
The 2015-2020 settlement didn't include the Crosstrek. That earlier case (*In re Subaru Battery Drain*) covered the 2015-2020 Outback, Forester, Legacy and WRX and the 2019-2020 Ascent.
The 2026 case does. In May 2026, Jalopnik reported a new class action naming the 2019-2023 Crosstrek and 2019-2024 Crosstrek Hybrid, along with several other Subarus. Plaintiffs claim "at least one electronic control module fails to put the vehicle into a low power sleep mode," so the battery drains while parked and keeps doing it after replacement. Jalopnik also notes that a Subaru service bulletin tells technicians to diagnose the drain rather than simply assume the data communication module (DCM) is at fault. These are allegations. There's no settlement and no recall as of October 2026.
Bad battery or drain? How to tell
| What happens | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Dies after sitting 1 to 3 days, starts fine after a jump and a drive | Parasitic drain |
| Slow crank every morning even with daily driving | Weak battery or a charging problem |
| New battery, still dying within weeks | Drain or charging system, not the battery |
| Battery light on while driving | Charging system (alternator or wiring) |
| Fails at auto start-stop restarts | Weak battery or starter; some owners just turn start-stop off while they diagnose |
Easy things to try first
- Check for things left on: dome and cargo lights, a liftgate not fully latched, phone chargers, dash cams or trackers wired to constant power.
- Keep the key away from the car. If the fob is close by in the garage, some systems stay awake longer.
- Drive longer, not just more often. Lots of 5-minute trips never fully recharge the battery.
- Get a free battery test. Most parts stores and dealers will do it. If the battery fails, replace it. If it passes, the problem is somewhere else.
- Use a battery maintainer if the car sits for a week or more.
- Ask for a parasitic draw test. A shop measures current with the car fully asleep and pulls fuses one by one to find the circuit that won't shut off.
What it costs
| Job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Battery test | Often free |
| Battery replacement, 2024 Crosstrek, dealer | $364 to $428 (parts $219 to $257, labor $145 to $171) per Kelley Blue Book |
| Parasitic draw diagnosis | Ask for a quote. It's usually billed as diagnostic time |
| Module repair or replacement if one is found | Depends on the part, so get it in writing |
| Battery maintainer | A one-time purchase that can save you a battery |
Kelley Blue Book's figures are for a Columbus, Ohio ZIP, so expect some regional difference.
What to ask the shop
- "Did you test the battery, the alternator and the parasitic draw, and what were the numbers?"
- "Which circuit or module is drawing current with the car asleep?"
- "Is there a service bulletin or software update for my VIN about battery drain?"
- "Is any of this covered by my warranty?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes, but fix the cause. Replacing batteries every few months costs more over time than one proper diagnosis. If you have a 2019-2023 Crosstrek with repeat dead batteries, save every receipt and service record in case the 2026 lawsuit leads to a settlement, and file a complaint at nhtsa.gov.
