A little rock chip on the highway, a cold morning, a blast of defrost, and suddenly there's a crack racing across your view. On most cars that's an annoyance. On a Crosstrek with EyeSight, it's an annoyance with a camera attached.
Why the Crosstrek job costs more
EyeSight uses a pair of cameras mounted at the top of the windshield, looking through the glass to judge distance for adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking and lane features. That changes three things:
- The glass matters. The cameras look straight through it, so clear, distortion-free glass in the right spot is part of how the system sees. That's why many Subaru specialists push genuine glass on EyeSight cars.
- Calibration is required. One Subaru specialist puts it plainly: "Subaru requires an Eyesight calibration after windshield replacement."
- Location matters. Damage in front of the cameras means replacement, not a resin repair.
What it costs
| Item | Price | Source / note |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine windshield, 2024 Crosstrek (part 65009FN020 or 65009FN00A) | $524 MSRP, about $355 online | SubaruPartsDeal; listed for the 2.5L |
| Genuine windshield, 2024 Crosstrek (part 65009FN041) | $1,339 MSRP, about $908 online | SubaruPartsDeal; fits 2.0L and 2.5L |
| Genuine windshield, 2024 Crosstrek (part 65009FN031) | $1,514 MSRP, about $1,027 online | SubaruPartsDeal; fits 2.0L and 2.5L |
| EyeSight calibration | $370 at one Berkeley, CA shop | Includes the wheel alignment it requires |
| Installation labor | Varies | Ask for an all-in quote |
| Insurance (comprehensive) | Your deductible, sometimes $0 for glass | Depends on your policy and state |
Those part numbers differ by equipment, so the right one depends on your VIN. Ask the shop to quote by VIN and tell you which part they're using. Big spread, right? That's exactly why you should see the number before you agree.
The 2024 crack complaints
Subaru's windshield class action (Powell v. Subaru) gave extended coverage for stress cracks on the 2019-2022 Forester and Ascent and the 2020-2022 Outback and Legacy. The Crosstrek isn't on that list. But 2024 Crosstrek owners have been filing similar complaints with NHTSA:
- A windshield that "spontaneously cracked, violently and with an explosive sound" on a 100°F Arizona freeway at 10,000 miles
- A crack that formed overnight across the top of the glass, right across EyeSight, while parked
- A crack running left to right on the second day of ownership
- A crack at the bottom of the passenger side after parking in a garage, at about 6,200 miles
- A crack that started after a loud pop on the highway and spread across most of the glass within an hour
These are owner reports, not a confirmed defect, and there's no Crosstrek windshield recall. If your crack started with no visible impact point, photograph it right away and ask a Subaru dealer whether any warranty or goodwill applies. A new-car limited warranty may treat a stress crack differently from a rock hit.
Easy things to do first
- Call your insurer before anyone else. Glass usually falls under comprehensive.
- Get chips fixed fast, as long as they're outside the camera area. Temperature swings turn chips into cracks.
- Go easy on the defroster with a chip in the glass. Blasting hot air onto a cold, chipped windshield is a classic crack starter.
- Tell the glass shop it's an EyeSight car and ask how they handle calibration before they book you.
What to ask before you pay
- "Is this genuine Subaru glass, and what's the part number for my VIN?"
- "Is EyeSight calibration included, and who does it?"
- "If EyeSight throws an error after the job, what happens?"
- "Does the windshield have the rain sensor, heated wiper area or other features my car came with?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes, quickly. Cracks tend to grow, a crack in your line of sight is a safety problem on its own, and a crack across the camera area can take EyeSight offline. Go through insurance if you can, insist on calibration, and keep the paperwork.
