The current Crosstrek (2024 and newer) has disc brakes at both ends and Subaru's EyeSight driver-assist system on every trim. That means your 'brake problem' can come from two very different places: worn parts you can see, or the camera system deciding to stop the car on its own. Let's sort out which one you've got and what it costs.
What brake work costs on a 2024+ Crosstrek
| Job | Where | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pads, one axle (2024) | Subaru dealer | $296 to $348 (KBB fair range) |
| Rear brake pads (2024, 2.0L or 2.5L) | Mobile or independent | About $335 (YourMechanic estimate) |
| Rear brake pads (2024) | Shop or dealer | $377 to $499 (YourMechanic shop/dealer range) |
| Brake fluid change | Any shop | Listed in KBB's schedule at 30,000 and 60,000 miles |
| EyeSight false braking diagnosis | Subaru dealer | Often warranty on a car this new; ask before they start |
KBB notes its pad price covers either the front or the rear, not both. If a shop quotes 'brakes' for $700-plus, ask whether that's both axles, or pads plus rotors.
Signs your pads are actually worn
- High-pitched squeal that shows up when you brake lightly. That's often the wear indicator tab.
- Grinding or growling. The pad material is gone. Stop driving and book it, because now it's chewing the rotor.
- Pulsing pedal. Warped or unevenly worn rotors.
- Car pulls to one side under braking. A sticky caliper or uneven pads.
- Longer stops or a low pedal. Could be fluid, a leak, or a booster issue. Get it checked right away.
When the 'brake problem' is really EyeSight
Service brakes are among the most-reported components for the 2024 Crosstrek at NHTSA, with 11 owner complaints. Several describe the car braking hard with nothing in front of it. One owner reported the brakes engaged twice at around 65 mph on the highway, dropping to about 45 mph with adaptive cruise off. Another said it braked on a clear side street over freshly patched pavement. Another 2024 owner reported a brake booster failure while backing out of a parking spot, and one said a dealer couldn't reproduce a delayed-braking problem.
If your Crosstrek brakes on its own, it's not a pad job. Here's what to do:
- Note the details. Speed, weather, road surface, time of day, and whether cruise control was on. A dash cam clip helps a lot.
- Clean the windshield in front of the EyeSight cameras, inside and out. Dirt, fog or a cracked windshield can confuse the system.
- Ask about software updates for EyeSight and the brake system at your next visit.
- File an NHTSA complaint. It creates a record and helps others.
- If the pedal goes soft or sinks, stop driving it. That's a hydraulic or booster problem, not EyeSight.
Recalls on the 2024 Crosstrek (not brake related)
NHTSA lists two recalls for the 2024 Crosstrek. Recall 23V551 covers an instrument panel harness that can rub on a steering bracket and short, and recall 23V754 covers front driveshafts whose outer race can crack. Neither is a brake recall, but both are free, so check your VIN while you're there.
DIY or shop?
Pads on a Crosstrek are a reasonable DIY job if you have a jack, stands, a torque wrench and some patience. Check your owner's manual or a service manual for how the parking brake works on the rear calipers before you push the rear pistons back, since many newer cars need a special procedure there. If you're not sure, a shop is the safer bet. Bad brake work is the one DIY mistake you can't just shrug off.
What to ask the shop before paying
- "Is this front, rear, or both, and how much pad is left?"
- "Do my rotors need replacing, or are they in spec?"
- "Is the brake fluid due based on my mileage?"
- "For the auto-braking problem, is there an EyeSight software update, and is the windshield area clean and calibrated?"
- "Is any of this covered under my 3-year/36,000-mile warranty?"
Is it worth fixing?
Always. A pad job on a Crosstrek is a few hundred dollars and it's the cheapest safety upgrade you'll ever buy. For phantom braking, work with the dealer while you're still under warranty and keep a written trail of every visit.
