Few things ruin a morning commute like the little "tick" of a rock hitting the glass, followed a week later by a crack wandering across your view. On a Model 3 there's a lot of glass to worry about: the windshield up front and a huge glass roof that runs back into the rear window. Here's what each one costs and how to keep the bill down.
What it costs (2017-2026 Model 3)
| Job | Typical price before insurance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chip repair (small, outside the camera area) | Often covered free by glass coverage | Only works on small chips, not long cracks |
| Windshield replacement | $850 to $1,600 | Recharged's range, includes calibration at many shops |
| ADAS camera recalibration (if billed separately) | $150 to $350 | Some shops include it, some don't |
| Roof glass panel | $1,000 to $2,000+ | Price depends on which panel and the damage |
| Mobile service fee | $0 to $150 | Some providers still need a shop visit for calibration |
One sponsored quote published by TFLcar priced a 2021 Model 3 windshield with OEM glass at about $2,444, so high quotes do exist. If you're seeing numbers near that, shop around.
Chip or crack? How to tell what you need
- Small chip, nowhere near the cameras: usually repairable with resin. Do it fast, before heat, cold or a car wash turns it into a crack.
- A crack longer than a few inches, or one that reaches the edge: plan on a new windshield.
- Any damage in front of the camera housing at the top center: replacement is the safe bet, since the forward cameras look right through that spot.
- A crack in the roof or rear glass: these panels are not chip-repaired like a windshield. Get it inspected and quoted.
Why calibration matters
The forward-facing cameras sit behind the windshield and feed Autopilot and the active safety features. Tesla's own Model 3 service documentation says the cameras have to self-calibrate after certain repairs, and it names a replaced windshield as an example of something that shifts the cameras. Calibration typically finishes after 20 to 25 miles of driving, and goes fastest on straight, multi-lane highways with clear lane markings. Autopilot features come back once it's done. If it still isn't finished after 100 miles of that kind of driving, Tesla says to contact them.
So don't panic if Autopilot is unavailable on the drive home from the glass shop. That's normal. Just keep an eye on the progress indicator on the touchscreen.
Tesla Service or a glass shop?
Tesla Service can do the job, and many independent shops work on Teslas every week. Safelite, for example, offers Model 3 replacement in-shop or mobile and says it re-aligns the driver-assistance components afterward. The rule of thumb from Recharged's guide is simple: pick a shop that does Teslas regularly. A shop that rarely sees one is more likely to have fit, glass quality or calibration headaches.
Aftermarket glass can save roughly $100 to $400, but optical clarity and fit matter more on a car that drives with cameras. Many Tesla windshields are laminated acoustic glass with heat and UV rejection, which is part of why the part costs more than on an average sedan.
Using insurance
Windshield damage usually falls under comprehensive coverage, not collision. Recharged's breakdown of out-of-pocket costs:
- Full glass coverage: often $0
- Moderate comprehensive deductible: about $250 to $500
- No comprehensive, or a high deductible: about $900 to $1,800
What to ask before you pay
- "Is this OEM glass or aftermarket, and is it acoustic glass?"
- "Is camera calibration included in the quote?"
- "Do you work on Teslas regularly?"
- "What's the warranty on leaks and wind noise?"
- For roof glass: "Is this covered under Tesla's warranty if there's no impact point?"
Is it worth fixing?
Always. Glass isn't a "repair or sell" decision, it's a "how cheaply can I do this" decision. Start with insurance, get two quotes from shops that work on Teslas, and fix chips the same week you get them. A $0 resin repair beats a four-figure windshield every time.
