Buying a used iPhone 15 is a smart move in 2026: USB-C, Dynamic Island, 48MP camera, years of updates left. And it’s one of the easiest used iPhones to check, because it shows details about its battery that older models hide.

1. Check the battery like a pro

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On an iPhone 15 you’ll see three useful things:

  • Maximum Capacity: 85% or higher is great for a phone this age.
  • Cycle Count: iPhone 15 batteries are designed to keep 80% capacity at 1,000 cycles. Under 400 cycles is lightly used.
  • Manufacture date: if it’s much newer than the phone, the battery has probably been replaced. Check step 3.

2. Make sure it’s not locked

The seller should sign out of their Apple Account and turn off Find My in front of you. No exceptions. A locked iPhone can’t be used.

3. Look at Parts and Service History

Settings > General > About. “Genuine Apple Part” next to a repaired part is fine. “Unknown Part” means a non-genuine screen, battery or camera, and Apple notes it can lower trade-in value. Price it in.

4. Test Face ID and the cameras

Set up Face ID. Take photos with every lens, including the 2x zoom shot, and the front camera. Record a quick video to check the mics.

5. Check the screen

Max brightness on a white page: no tint, lines or dead spots. Then a black image in a dim room: a genuine OLED is truly black.

6. Test USB-C charging

Plug in a USB-C cable. It should click in and start charging right away. Lint in the port is common and easy to clean; a wiggly port isn’t.

7. Ask about water

Muffled speakers or a foggy lens are red flags. Water damage on an iPhone 15 costs $609 at Apple, so walk away if you suspect it.

What a problem should knock off the price

ProblemApple’s price to fix
Battery under 80%$99
Cracked screen$279
Cracked back glass$159
Water or other damage$609

Where to buy a used one safely

Apple’s certified refurbished store and big carriers sell used iPhones with a warranty and a fresh battery, so they cost a bit more but carry the least risk. Marketplaces and private sellers are cheaper, but stick to ones with buyer protection or a return window. If you’re meeting a stranger, do it somewhere public with good Wi-Fi so you can run through every check above before you pay.

After you buy

Regular AppleCare+ is sold with new iPhones, but Apple’s AppleCare One plan can cover devices you already own if they’re under four years old and in good shape, which a used iPhone 15 usually is. It may need a quick inspection. Otherwise, check if your carrier or credit card covers phones. Then put a case on it.
