The thing to check: how close is the shop price to Apple?
On the iPhone 15, the top end of shop OLED prices ($250) gets pretty close to Apple’s $279. If a shop quotes you $240 for an aftermarket OLED, honestly just pay the extra $39 and get a genuine screen from Apple, with Apple’s service guarantee.
Where shops win is the middle of the range: a good OLED around $150 to $190 saves you real money.

- Face ID keeps working after a proper shop repair.
- True Tone needs the shop to transfer it from your old screen. Ask.
- A non-genuine screen shows as an Unknown Part in Settings > General > About, which can lower trade-in value later.
