P0230: Fuel Pump Primary Circuit
The engine computer sees a problem in the circuit that turns the fuel pump on, usually the relay control side.
What P0230 means
When you turn the key, the engine computer or a separate fuel pump control module switches on the fuel pump, usually by energizing a relay. RepairPal explains that if the computer detects an incorrect signal to or from the pump, it sets P0230. The primary circuit is the low current control side, so the code often comes from a failed relay, a blown fuse, a broken wire or a bad connector. A failing pump that draws too much current can damage the relay or blow the fuse, so the pump itself is still a possibility. RepairPal lists fuel pump replacement as the common repair, but testing comes first. KBB warns that you may be able to drive for now, but the car could become a no-start and leave you stranded. Shops command the pump on with a scan tool, check for voltage at the relay and the pump, and measure pump current draw. Once the failing part is found, the repair is usually straightforward.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Engine may not start
- Engine cranks but will not fire
- Stalling or loss of power while driving
- No hum from the fuel pump when the key is turned on
Most common causes
- Failed fuel pump relay
- Open or shorted wiring in the pump control circuit
- Failing fuel pump drawing too much current
- Blown fuel pump fuse
- Fuel pump control module or engine computer fault
What to check yourself first
Turn the key to on without starting and listen for a two second hum from the fuel tank area. Check the fuel pump fuse and swap the fuel pump relay with an identical one in the fuse box, like the horn relay, to test it.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace fuel pump relay | $89-$108 | A cheap and common fix when the relay clicks but does not pass power. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring or connector problems in the pump circuit. |
| Replace fuel pump | $1,344-$1,513 | RepairPal lists fuel pump replacement as the common repair once the circuit is confirmed. |
| Replace engine control module (ECM/PCM) | $1,122-$1,192 | Only if the pump driver in the computer or pump control module is bad. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
