P0627: Fuel Pump "A" Control Circuit/Open
The engine computer has found an open or faulty control circuit for the fuel pump, so the pump may not be running properly.
What P0627 means
On many newer vehicles, the engine computer controls the fuel pump directly or through a fuel pump driver module that varies pump speed. RepairPal explains that P0627 sets when the computer detects that the fuel pump is not operating properly, and the code name tells you it has found the control circuit open. RepairPal lists fuel pump failure, wiring issues and computer failure as causes. KBB notes problems with the pump and relay can cause a no start and even a no crank on some cars, and advises against driving with this code active. In practice, shops find relays, connectors and wiring near the tank or pump module at fault often, since that area sees water and road salt. Some vehicles also have known issues with the pump driver module. Shops command the pump with a scan tool, check for power at the relay, module and pump, and measure circuit resistance. Once the open circuit is found, the pump usually runs again right away.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Engine cranks but will not start
- Stalling while driving
- Reduced engine performance
- No fuel pump hum when the key is turned on
Most common causes
- Failed fuel pump relay
- Open or damaged wiring in the pump control circuit
- Failed fuel pump driver module
- Failing fuel pump
- Corroded connector at the tank or module
- Engine computer driver failure
What to check yourself first
Turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump hum. Check the fuel pump fuse and try swapping the pump relay with an identical relay. On cars with a separate fuel pump driver module, often in the trunk or under the rear seat, check its connector for corrosion.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace fuel pump relay | $89-$108 | A low cost common fix if the relay is bad. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For open wiring or a corroded connector, often near the tank. |
| Replace fuel pump | $1,344-$1,513 | RepairPal lists fuel pump replacement as the common repair once wiring is cleared. |
| Replace engine control module (ECM/PCM) | $1,122-$1,192 | Only if the computer pump driver is confirmed bad. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
