P0750: Shift Solenoid "A"
The transmission computer has found a problem with shift solenoid A, which controls fluid flow to make certain gear changes.
What P0750 means
Shift solenoids are electric valves that direct transmission fluid to shift valves in the valve body, which apply the clutches and bands for each gear. RepairPal explains that shift solenoid A typically enables the 1-2 shift on many transmissions and that P0750 sets when the computer does not see the expected RPM change during a commanded shift, or detects an electrical problem with the solenoid. When solenoid A fails, the transmission often goes into limp mode and holds a single gear, which KBB notes can limit speed to around 35 mph on some cars and risks further damage. Common causes are a failed solenoid coil, wiring and connector problems, fluid that is low or dirty enough to make the solenoid stick, and valve body wear. Shops measure solenoid resistance through the case connector, command it with a scan tool and check fluid. On many transmissions solenoids are replaced after dropping the pan, while others come as a pack or require valve body removal.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Stuck in one gear (often second or third)
- Harsh or missed shifts
- Vehicle limited to around 35 mph in some cases
- Worse fuel economy
Most common causes
- Failed shift solenoid A
- Open or shorted solenoid wiring
- Corroded or leaking transmission connector
- Dirty or low fluid causing the solenoid to stick
- Valve body problem
- Transmission control module fault
What to check yourself first
Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Look at the wiring connector on the transmission case for oil seeping through it, a common problem on some models. Note which gears you have and which are missing.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission filter and fluid service | $621-$785 | Shift solenoids are often inside the pan, so repair is usually done with a pan and filter service. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring or connector faults, common at the case connector. |
| Transmission fluid change | $294-$356 | Low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes. Check the correct fluid type for your transmission. |
| Replace transmission control module | $929-$1,006 | Only if the solenoid driver is faulty. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
