P0760: Shift Solenoid "C"
The transmission computer sees a problem with shift solenoid C, which helps control pressure and gear changes.
What P0760 means
Many automatic transmissions use three or more shift solenoids, labeled A, B, C and so on. RepairPal explains that the transmission computer uses shift solenoids to control the hydraulic pressure needed to apply clutch packs for the different gears, and that it sets P0760 when solenoid C is not performing as desired. RepairPal lists a failed transmission computer, low fluid level, a failed shift solenoid and wiring issues as causes. What solenoid C controls varies by transmission, so its symptoms vary too, from a missing gear to harsh shifts. KBB notes that it may push the car into limp mode, which caps speed and disables some functions. As with other solenoid codes, low or dirty fluid is the first thing to rule out, since debris can make solenoids stick. Shops then measure the solenoid resistance, check the wiring and command the solenoid with a scan tool. If it tests bad, it is replaced, often during a pan and filter service.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Limp mode with limited speed
- Harsh, delayed or missing shifts
- Increased fuel consumption
- Stuck in one gear
Most common causes
- Failed shift solenoid C
- Low transmission fluid level
- Wiring or connector problem
- Contaminated fluid causing solenoid sticking
- Transmission control module fault
What to check yourself first
Check the fluid level first; RepairPal lists low fluid as a cause. Inspect the transmission connector for corrosion or oil. Note any gears that are missing or shifts that feel wrong.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission fluid change | $294-$356 | Low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes. Check the correct fluid type for your transmission. |
| Transmission filter and fluid service | $621-$785 | Shift solenoid replacement is usually done with a pan and filter service. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring faults. |
| Replace transmission control module | $929-$1,006 | RepairPal lists transmission control module failure as a possible cause. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
