P0841: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Range/Performance
The transmission fluid pressure switch or sensor is reporting pressure that does not match what the computer commanded.
What P0841 means
Some transmissions use pressure switches or sensors to confirm that hydraulic pressure is reaching the clutches when the computer commands a shift. RepairPal explains that the fluid pressure switch lets the computer confirm clutch application for smoother shifting, and lists computer failure, low fluid and pressure switch problems among the causes. P0841 is a range or performance code, so the switch is working electrically but its signal does not match what the computer expects. For example, the switch reads pressure when none was commanded, or stays off after a shift. That can come from a failed switch, low or contaminated fluid, a valve body problem or an internal leak that lets pressure bleed off. KBB warns that it may seem fine at first but shifting will get harder and more dangerous. Shops check fluid level and condition, compare the switch reading with commanded solenoid states on a scan tool, and test line pressure with a gauge. The fix ranges from a switch to valve body work.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission in limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Slipping in some cases
Most common causes
- Faulty fluid pressure switch or sensor
- Low transmission fluid level
- Contaminated fluid
- Wiring or connector problem
- Valve body or internal pressure leak
- Transmission control module fault
What to check yourself first
Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Look for leaks around the transmission pan and cooler lines. Note whether the shifting problem is worse cold or hot.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission fluid change | $294-$356 | Low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes. Check the correct fluid type for your transmission. |
| Transmission filter and fluid service | $621-$785 | The pressure switch is often part of the valve body or solenoid pack inside the pan. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring or connector faults. |
| Replace transmission control module | $929-$1,006 | RepairPal lists transmission computer failure as a possible cause. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
