The Series 7 came out in 2021 in 41mm and 45mm sizes, and the screen sits right on top of the case. Looks great. Also means the glass is the first thing to meet door frames and kitchen counters.

What Apple charges, by model

Apple lists a cracked Apple Watch screen under other damage, and the price depends on your case.

Aluminum or Nike, GPS$299$69
Aluminum or Nike, GPS + Cellular$349$69
Stainless steel, GPS + Cellular$399$69
Hermès$399$79
Edition (titanium)$499$79
Battery service (any model)$99$0 below 80% capacity

Which one do you have?

On your iPhone, open the Watch app, go to General > About, and check the model name. Or flip the watch over. Apple says the engraving on the back lists the case size and material. Series 7 came in 41mm and 45mm.

Why steel and titanium cost more

Per Apple, the aluminum and Nike Series 7 models use Ion-X glass on the front. The stainless steel, Hermès and titanium Edition models use sapphire crystal, which is much harder to scratch. A repair on the fancier case means fancier parts, and the price follows.

Can it be fixed for less?

Some independent shops replace Apple Watch screens. It's fiddly, glued-down work on a tiny device. If you go that route, ask:

  • Have you done Series 7 screens before, in my size?
  • Is the replacement screen genuine or aftermarket? Does touch, brightness and always-on still work after?
  • How do you reseal it, and is it still water resistant afterward?
  • What warranty do I get?

Is it safe to keep wearing?

A hairline crack, usually yes for a little while. A shattered screen, be careful. Tiny glass splinters can catch skin and sleeves. A clear screen protector holds things together short term. Keep it away from water, because a crack is a doorway for moisture.

Before you send it in

Unpair the watch before it goes anywhere. On your iPhone, open the Watch app, tap All Watches, tap the info button next to your watch, and choose Unpair Apple Watch. Your iPhone backs up the watch as part of unpairing and turns off Activation Lock, so Apple or a shop can work on it. When you get a watch back, pair it again and restore from that backup to get your faces, settings and health data back.

Fix it or upgrade?

This is where the Series 7 gets tricky. It's a 2021 watch. Picture this: you've got an aluminum GPS model with a cracked screen and a battery that only lasts until dinner. Even the cheapest screen fix is $299, and at $300 to $400 you're in the price range of a newer Apple Watch, which comes with a fresh battery and newer features.

Repair makes the most sense if you have AppleCare+ ($69), or a stainless steel or titanium model you love and want to keep. Otherwise, run it through our repair or replace calculator.
