The Series 9 came out in 2023, so a lot of them are three years into nightly charging. If yours used to make it to bedtime and now taps out by dinner, the battery has probably aged. Here’s how to tell, and what to do.

Check battery health

On your watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and look at Maximum Capacity.

Battery healthWhat it means
90% or higherBattery’s fine. Look at settings first
80% – 89%Normal aging. Fine for most people
Under 80%Worn out. Battery service will help

Try these before paying

  • Turn off Always On in Settings > Display & Brightness if you don’t need it. It’s one of the biggest battery users on the watch.
  • Check background apps: apps that refresh constantly can drain it. Turn off Background App Refresh for ones you don’t use much.
  • Workout GPS: long outdoor workouts with GPS use a lot of power. That’s normal, not a bad battery.
  • Update watchOS and restart the watch. Updates sometimes fix battery bugs.
  • Unpair and re-pair as a last resort. It clears out settings that might be causing drain.

What it costs

OptionPrice
Apple battery service$99
With AppleCare+$0 if under 80%
Cracked screen or other damage$299 – $399

Apple may replace the whole watch rather than open yours up, so you could walk out with a refurbished watch that looks and works like new.

Before you send it in

Unpair the watch from your iPhone first. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap All Watches, tap the info button next to your watch, then Unpair Apple Watch. Your iPhone makes a fresh backup of the watch as part of unpairing, and it turns off Activation Lock so Apple or the shop can actually work on it. When you get the watch back, pair it again and choose to restore from that backup. Your watch faces, settings and health data come right back.

When $99 is worth it

If your Series 9 works great otherwise (screen intact, sensors working, no water damage), $99 for all-day battery life is a solid deal. It’s far cheaper than any new Apple Watch.

When to skip it

If the screen is cracked too, you’re looking at the $299 to $399 damage price instead. At that point, compare with a newer watch. Our repair or replace calculator helps you decide in a few seconds.
