The Ultra 2 launched in September 2023 at $799, and Apple added a black titanium finish in 2024. It has a flat sapphire crystal and a raised titanium rim built to take hits. Still, a corner strike on rock or concrete can crack sapphire. If yours did, here's where your money goes.
What Apple charges
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked screen or other damage | $499 | $79 |
| Battery service | $99 | $0 below 80% health |
| Theft or loss (AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss) | Not offered | $119 |
Every Ultra 2 is 49mm titanium with GPS + Cellular, so there's one price for all of them. Apple inspects the watch first, and hidden damage can change the quote. Shipping fees may apply for mail-in service.
The DIY numbers don't add up
On older Apple Watches, a DIY screen saves you a lot. On the Ultra 2, not so much:
| Option | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Apple repair | $499 | Genuine part, Apple's seal and testing |
| iFixit Ultra 2 screen | $352.99 | Plus adhesive and tools, 1 to 2 hours of careful work |
| Apple with AppleCare+ | $79 | Plan cost already paid |
Saving about $146 sounds nice until you remember that iFixit calls the Ultra one of the harder screen jobs, mostly because of the adhesive and cable routing. Crack the new screen during install and you're out $353 and still need a repair. Then there's water. The Ultra 2 is rated to 100 meters. A home reseal won't match that, and lots of Ultra owners actually swim and dive with theirs.
Crack or just a mark?
- Wipe it first. Sapphire is very scratch resistant, and what looks like a scratch is often metal or paint rubbed off whatever you hit. A damp microfiber cloth may clear it.
- Fingernail test. If your nail catches on the line, it's real.
- Check touch in every corner. Dead zones or ghost touches mean the OLED panel under the glass is damaged too.
- Look for lifting. A screen pushed up from the case can mean a swollen battery. Stop charging it.
Good news on software
Unlike the first Ultra, the Ultra 2 is still supported by watchOS 27, Apple's current watch software. Apple said the new features need the processing power of the Series 9 chip and later, and the Ultra 2 has it. So a repair here goes into a watch that's still getting new features.
AppleCare+ math
If you're reading this before you crack it, the Ultra 2 is exactly the watch where AppleCare+ pays off. Every accidental damage claim is $79 instead of $499. If you do cracked-screen-level damage even once during the plan, it likely beats paying Apple's full price.
What to ask before you pay
- Is it a genuine Apple display? Will the watch keep its water resistance rating?
- Will you test the touchscreen, Action button, Digital Crown and siren before I pay?
- Is the quote the total, including tax and shipping?
- With AppleCare+: can I get Express Replacement so I'm not without a watch?
Before you send it in
Unpair the watch in the Watch app on your iPhone. That backs it up, erases it and removes Activation Lock. Take the band off and keep it. If a store isn't close, Apple can send a prepaid box.
Is it worth fixing?
- With AppleCare+: yes, every time. $79 is easy.
- Without it: usually yes. The Ultra 2 is still current on watchOS, and $499 is less than buying a new Ultra. Get a trade-in quote on the cracked watch too, just so you know your options.
- DIY: only if you're experienced and won't take it in the water again. The savings are small.
