The Fold8 starts at $1,899, so a screen problem feels scary. The good news is that Samsung publishes its prices, and they're a lot less than a new phone. The bad news is that the inner screen is one of the hardest parts on any phone to replace yourself.

Which screen do you need?

The Fold8 has two screens:

  • Inner (main) screen: the 7.6-inch folding display you see when the phone is open. Creases are normal. Lines, black spots, dead touch areas or a split along the fold are not.
  • Cover (outer) screen: the 5.5-inch display on the front when it's closed. It's out in the open when the phone is closed, so it tends to crack the way a normal phone screen does.

Samsung's prices can vary by region or authorized store and leave out taxes and fees. Samsung also notes that foldable screen repair is available by mail-in, and you'll need to log into your Samsung account to request it. Batteries Plus lists the Fold8 as a model but didn't show any Fold8 repair prices when we checked.

Screen Repair or Screen Module Replacement?

Samsung's cheaper Screen Repair swaps only the screen. It isn't allowed if the frame is bent or broken or the battery is swelling. The Screen Module Replacement replaces the screen, the metal frame and the battery in one go. If your phone took a hard drop that bent the frame, or the battery is getting tired anyway, the $579 module job gets you more new parts for the extra $160.

Why you shouldn't DIY this one

iFixit tore down the Fold8 and gave it a provisional 4 out of 10 for repairability. The inner screen's plastic bezel chipped and broke during removal, and the folding OLED didn't survive. Worse, Samsung appears to treat the hinge and inner display as one replacement assembly, so damage to either means essentially emptying the phone, which sacrifices both battery cells along the way.

The cover screen is easier to reach, but iFixit says it's held down with very strong adhesive. For both screens, a factory repair through Samsung is the safe bet.

The hinge and dust problem

The Fold8 is rated IP48. That 4 only covers solid objects 1 mm and larger, so it isn't dustproof. In iFixit's test, fine powder and beach sand got into the hinge, which started grinding and stopped opening normally. If your Fold8 crunches when you open it, that's a hinge issue, and it may drag the inner screen repair along with it.

What to ask before you send it in

  • Is the inner screen quote for Screen Repair or the full module?
  • Is the hinge included, or quoted separately?
  • How long is mail-in turnaround? (Samsung lists 5 to 7 business days for mail-in module repairs.)
  • What warranty covers the new screen?

Buying a used Fold8

A used Fold8 with a bad inner screen is a $419 to $579 problem hiding behind a nice cover screen. Open it fully and check the whole panel. Then run a free IMEI check to confirm the model and lost-or-stolen status, and follow the guided steps for carrier lock, Google lock and replaced parts.

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Even the $579 module replacement is a fraction of the $1,899 starting price, and a $139 cover screen is an easy yes. If you have Care+, file the claim; $29 is the best deal in phone repair.
