The iPad 10th generation is everywhere: kids’ iPads, school iPads, the kitchen iPad. So it gets dropped a lot. The good news is it’s one of the friendliest iPads to fix, and it comes down to how the screen is built.
What Apple charges
Apple doesn’t replace just the screen on this iPad. A crack counts as “other damage,” and Apple usually swaps the whole iPad.
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked screen or other damage (Wi-Fi) | $349 | $29 for the screen |
| Cracked screen or other damage (Cellular) | $399 | $29 for the screen |
| Battery | $119 | Free under 80% health |
The trick: the glass is separate
Almost every other current iPad, including the Air, mini and Pro, has a “laminated” display, where the glass and the screen underneath are glued into one piece. Crack the glass and the whole thing has to be replaced.
The iPad 10th gen isn’t built like that. There’s a thin air gap between the touch glass and the LCD underneath. Apple did that partly so cracked iPads in schools and offices are cheaper to fix. For you, it means a shop can often swap only the cracked glass and keep your original display.
How to tell what you need
Turn the iPad on and look past the cracks:
- Picture looks normal, touch works: you probably only need new glass. That’s the cheap repair.
- Black spots, colored lines or a dark patch: the LCD underneath is damaged too, so you need glass and display. Still doable, just pricier.
- Touch doesn’t respond in some spots: that’s usually the glass, since touch lives in the glass on this iPad.
Apple or a shop?
Apple ($349) gives you a replacement iPad with a warranty. It makes sense if you have AppleCare+ ($29), or if the iPad has other problems too, since you’re basically getting a fresh one.
A good shop makes sense when only the glass is cracked. Ask them:
- Are you replacing just the glass, or glass and LCD?
- Is the Home-style Touch ID in the top button still working after? (It should; it isn’t part of the glass.)
- What warranty do you give?
Is it worth fixing?
Usually yes, especially with a glass-only repair at a shop. Before paying Apple’s $349, though, compare it with what a newer basic iPad costs. If the battery’s tired too, read our iPad 10th gen battery guide.
