The iPad 10th gen came out in 2022, so plenty of them are four years into daily charging. If it used to last all day and now dies halfway through a show, the battery has probably just worn out. That’s normal, and it’s fixable.

Try these first
Before you pay anything, rule out the easy stuff. A lot of “bad battery” iPads just have one app or setting draining them.
- Check what’s using power: Settings > Battery shows the apps that used the most in the last day. A game or video app running in the background is a common culprit.
- Lower the brightness: the screen is the biggest battery user on any iPad. Turn on Auto-Brightness.
- Turn off Background App Refresh for apps that don’t need it, in Settings > General.
- Update iPadOS: updates sometimes fix battery bugs. It’s normal for the iPad to work harder for a day or two right after an update.
- Restart it: stuck processes can quietly drain power. A restart clears them.
If you’ve done all that and it still drains fast, it’s the battery.
When $119 makes sense
Get the battery done if:
- The screen, buttons and charging port all work fine
- It still runs the apps you use without feeling slow
- You plan to keep it at least another year or two
When to skip it
If the screen is cracked and the battery is tired, the math changes. That’s two problems on a four-year-old iPad. Look at what a new basic iPad costs before you spend on both. Our repair or replace calculator will tell you which way to lean.
Make the battery last
- Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun. Heat is what really ages batteries.
- If it sits unused for weeks, store it at about half charge instead of full or empty.
- Use a decent charger. You don’t need anything fancy, but cheap no-name chargers aren’t worth the risk.
Is AppleCare+ worth it on this iPad?
If the iPad belongs to a kid, often yes. A cracked screen is $29 with AppleCare+ instead of $349, and the battery service is free once it’s worn out. For an adult who keeps it in a case on the couch, it’s more of a toss-up.
