The iPad Air 5th gen came out in March 2022 with Apple's M1 chip, the same chip that was in Macs at the time. It's still a very capable tablet and still gets iPadOS 27. So when the glass cracks, fixing it is often the right call. It just pays to know the numbers first.

What Apple charges

Apple doesn't do a screen-only repair on this iPad. A crack counts as other damage, and Apple usually hands you a replacement unit.

Why it's not a cheap glass swap

Apple's spec sheet lists the Air 5 with a fully laminated display, an antireflective coating (1.8% reflectivity) and True Tone. Laminated means glass, touch layer and LCD are one bonded piece. It's why the screen looks so crisp and why the Apple Pencil (2nd gen) feels close to the ink. It's also why a crack means replacing the whole display assembly.

Same story on the iPad Air 4th gen. In fact, iFixit lists one screen part that fits both the Air 4 and Air 5. That's handy if you're shopping around, because any shop that does Air 4 screens can do yours with the same part.

Figure out how bad it is

  • Small crack, picture and touch perfect: you can wait. Put a tempered glass protector on to keep it from spreading.
  • Touch dead or jumpy in one area: the touch layer is damaged and it usually spreads.
  • Lines, black blots or a white patch: the LCD is damaged. Time to fix it.
  • Bent aluminum near the crack: a new display may not sit flat. Mention it when you get quotes.

Before you go anywhere

  • Back up (Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup). Apple may swap the unit.
  • Check coverage at Apple's coverage site. $49 versus $499 is a huge difference.
  • Cover sharp cracks with clear tape so nobody gets cut.

Apple or an independent shop?

Apple is the easy pick with AppleCare+. Without it, Apple's $499 buys a replacement iPad with a warranty, which isn't terrible if the battery is also tired, since you get a fresh one.

A shop can be cheaper when you're paying out of pocket. The screen part alone is $169.99 from iFixit, so a fair shop quote is that plus skilled labor. Ask:

  • Is it an original Apple display or an aftermarket one?
  • Will True Tone and Apple Pencil still work properly?
  • Does it have the same antireflective coating?
  • What's the warranty, and does it cover touch issues?

Is it worth fixing?

Usually, yes. An M1 iPad Air is still fast and still supported. With AppleCare+ it's an easy $49. Without it, get a shop quote. If it's well under $499 and the shop answers the questions above well, fix it. If you're going to Apple anyway, compare $499 with Apple's current M4 iPad Air, which starts at $749.
