The M2 iPad Air came out in May 2024, the first Air to come in two sizes. Apple replaced it with the M3 model in March 2025, so most of these are still young, still fast, and very much worth keeping. A crack is annoying, but how annoying depends almost entirely on AppleCare+.
What Apple charges
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked screen or other damage (Wi-Fi) | $529 | $29 screen, $99 other damage |
| Cracked screen or other damage (Cellular) | $579 | $29 screen, $99 other damage |
| Battery service | $119 | $0 below 80% health |
Apple prices a cracked screen the same as other damage and usually gives you a replacement iPad rather than repairing yours. That's why it's not cheap. But if you have AppleCare+, the screen-only fee is just $29, which is a much better deal than the $49 "other damage" fee older iPads had.
Why there's no glass-only option
Apple's spec sheet lists the 11-inch M2 Air as having a fully laminated display with an antireflective coating and True Tone. Laminated means the cover glass, touch layer and LCD are bonded into one piece. It looks great and makes Apple Pencil Pro feel like you're drawing right on the pixels.
The trade-off: crack the glass and the whole display assembly gets replaced. Compare that with the basic iPads (like the 9th gen), where a shop can often swap just the glass.
How bad is your crack?
- Hairline crack, perfect picture, touch fine: you can live with it for a while. Add a tempered glass protector so it doesn't spread or shed slivers.
- Touch skips or ghost-taps in one area: the touch layer is hurt. It tends to get worse.
- Lines, black blots or a green or white patch: the LCD is damaged. Fix it.
- Bent frame: Apple counts that as other damage anyway. A shop may not be able to seat a new display flat.
Do these first
- Back up (Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup). If Apple swaps the unit, you'll restore onto the new one.
- Check your coverage at Apple's coverage page. AppleCare+ is the difference between $29 and $529.
- Turn off Find My before you hand it over. Apple will ask.
Apple or an independent shop?
With AppleCare+: go to Apple. $29, done.
Without AppleCare+: get a written quote from a reputable shop and compare it with $529. Laminated iPad displays vary a lot in quality, so ask:
- Is it an original Apple display, a refurbished original, or an aftermarket copy?
- Will True Tone, the antireflective coating and Apple Pencil hover still work?
- How long is the warranty, and does it cover touch problems?
- If the frame is slightly bent, will you tell me before you start?
Is it worth fixing?
With AppleCare+, absolutely. Without it, $529 is a big chunk of a new iPad Air (Apple's current M4 Air starts at $749). On a fast, recent iPad like this, fixing still usually wins, especially if the battery is healthy. Check battery health first. This iPad can show it in Settings, and our iPad Air M2 battery guide explains how.
