The iPad mini A17 Pro (late 2024) is small enough to toss in a jacket pocket or a purse, read in bed one-handed, or hand to a kid in the back seat. All of those are also great ways to crack it. Here's what fixing it costs and how to decide.
What Apple charges
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked screen or other damage (Wi-Fi) | $429 | $29 screen, $99 other damage |
| Cracked screen or other damage (Cellular) | $479 | $29 screen, $99 other damage |
| Battery | $119 | $0 below 80% health |
Apple prices a cracked screen the same as other damage on this iPad. One small corner crack and a fully shattered screen cost the same $429.
Why the whole display gets replaced
Apple's tech specs list the iPad mini A17 Pro display as fully laminated with an antireflective coating. The glass, touch layer and LCD are bonded together, which is why the screen looks so crisp and why Apple Pencil Pro feels like it's writing right on the picture.
Apple's official parts list for this model backs that up. It offers a display (part 661-46753 for Wi-Fi, 661-46754 for Cellular) and display adhesive, and no separate cover glass. Compare that with the basic iPad A16, where Apple sells the glass on its own (our iPad A16 screen guide explains it).
How to tell how bad it is
- Small crack, touch and picture are perfect: you can wait. Add a tempered glass protector so the crack doesn't spread or shed glass.
- Touch misses taps or types random letters: the touch layer is damaged. These usually get worse, not better.
- Lines, black spots or a bright patch: the LCD is damaged. Fix it before it spreads.
- Bent corner: if the aluminum frame is bent, a new display may not sit flat. Apple will still treat it as other damage.
Easy things to do right now
- Back it up. If Apple swaps the iPad, you'll restore onto the replacement.
- Cover the cracks with clear tape or a screen protector, especially if a kid uses it.
- Check AppleCare+. Apple's coverage page tells you in a minute if you're looking at $29 or $429.
- Turn off Find My right before you hand it in for service. Apple will ask.
Apple or an independent shop?
Apple is the obvious pick with AppleCare+. It's also the safer pick if you care about the antireflective coating, True Tone and Apple Pencil Pro working exactly as before.
An independent shop might be cheaper if you're paying full price. Get a written quote, and ask the questions below. Small iPads have small, fragile cables, so experience matters more than price here.
What to ask the shop
- Is the replacement display an original, a refurbished original, or an aftermarket copy?
- Does it keep the antireflective coating and True Tone?
- Will Apple Pencil Pro and hover work afterward?
- What warranty do you give, and does it cover touch problems?
Make the next drop cheaper
The mini lives in pockets and bags with keys and coins, so a case with a raised lip around the screen does a lot of work here. A folio cover that closes over the screen is even better for bag life.
Is it worth fixing?
With AppleCare+, yes, it's $29. Without it, $429 is a big part of what a new mini costs, so it comes down to the rest of the iPad. Battery health still Normal and no other problems? Fix it. Battery also tired? Read our iPad mini A17 Pro battery guide before you decide.
