The iPhone 16 Plus has a big 6.7-inch OLED screen, and big screens make big targets. The good news: you've got three real choices for fixing it. The bad news: the cheapest one comes with trade-offs you should know about before you say yes.

What Apple charges

These are Apple's own US prices for the iPhone 16 Plus.

RepairApple price (no coverage)With AppleCare+
Screen damage$329$29
Screen and back glass damage$419Not listed as a single fee
Back glass damage$159$29
Battery service$99$0 (under 80% health)
Other damage$669$99

Apple puts in a genuine screen and guarantees the repair for 90 days or the rest of your warranty, whichever is longer.

Your three screen options

ScreenTypical priceWhat you get
Aftermarket LCD$80 to $140Cheapest. Dimmer, thicker black border, grayer blacks, uses more battery
Aftermarket OLED$150 to $250Close to the original look with true blacks. Color and brightness can be a little off
Genuine Apple$329 at Apple ($29 with AppleCare+)Exactly what came in the phone, listed as genuine in Settings

Which one should you pick?

Aftermarket LCD makes sense if the phone is a backup, a kid's phone, or you're selling it soon and just need it working. On a 6.7-inch screen, the dimmer picture and thicker border are easy to notice, and an LCD in a phone built for OLED usually drains the battery faster.

Aftermarket OLED is the sweet spot for most people paying out of pocket. It looks a lot like the original, keeps true blacks, and saves you around $80 to $180 versus Apple.

Genuine at Apple is the pick if you have AppleCare+ ($29, done), if you plan to trade the phone in, or if you're picky about color accuracy.

What changes after a shop repair

  • Parts and Service History: A non-genuine screen shows as Unknown Part under Settings > General > About. Apple says that can lower trade-in value.
  • True Tone: Only works if the shop transfers it from your old screen. Good shops do this. Ask.
  • Face ID: Lives near the top of the screen. A careful repair leaves it working. If Face ID dies after a repair, take it straight back.
  • Water resistance: The 16 Plus is rated IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes from the factory, and Apple says that resistance can drop over time. After any screen swap, treat it as not waterproof.

How bad is your crack?

  • Glass cracked, picture and touch are fine: You can wait a bit. Use a screen protector or tape to hold it together.
  • Lines, black spots, flicker: The OLED panel is damaged. Get it fixed soon.
  • Ghost touches or dead zones: Fix it now. It can open apps and type by itself.
  • Black screen but the phone still rings: Back it up before anyone touches it.

Questions to ask the shop

  • Is this an LCD, an aftermarket OLED, or a genuine Apple screen?
  • Will you transfer True Tone?
  • What warranty do I get, and does it cover touch and display problems?
  • How long will it take?

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. The 16 Plus has an A18 chip and years of updates left. An aftermarket OLED at $150 to $250 or a genuine screen at $329 is far cheaper than a new phone. If your battery is fading too, our iPhone 16 Plus battery guide explains when that $99 swap is worth it, and some shops take a bit off when you do both at once.
