When Apple launched the 16e in February 2025, it bragged about the best battery life ever on a 6.1-inch iPhone, up to 26 hours of video playback. So if yours isn't lasting, the question is simple: is the battery worn out, or is something else eating it?

What Apple charges

RepairApple price (no coverage)With AppleCare+
Battery service$99$0 (under 80% health)
Screen damage$229$29
Back glass damage$159$29
Other damage$519$99

These are Apple's own US prices for the iPhone 16e. Apple installs a genuine battery and guarantees the repair for 90 days or the rest of your warranty, whichever is longer.

How to tell if the battery is the problem

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and look at two things:

  • Maximum Capacity: How much charge the battery holds compared with new. Under 80% is replacement territory.
  • Cycle count: iPhone 15 and later models also show how many charge cycles the battery has been through. Apple says these batteries are designed to keep 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions.

A 16e bought at launch that ran through about one full charge a day is somewhere near 590 cycles by now. Plenty of them will still be in the high 80s. If yours dropped faster, heat is the usual suspect: phones that live on car dashboards, charge under pillows, or game for hours while plugged in age faster.

Things to try before you pay

Say your 16e shows 92% health but dies before dinner. That's almost never the battery. Try these:

  • Check Settings > Battery for the app using the most power. One misbehaving app can wreck your day.
  • Restart the phone and update iOS.
  • Give it a couple of days after a big iOS update. Background indexing burns extra power at first.
  • Turn on Low Power Mode on heavy days.
  • Check the charge limit. On iPhone 15 and later, Apple says a set charging limit can stop the phone at 80% on purpose. Look in Settings > Battery.

About charging the 16e

The 16e charges over USB-C and reaches about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter. It also works with Qi wireless chargers, but it doesn't have MagSafe, and Apple says its wireless charging runs at 7.5W. So if it feels slow on a wireless pad, that's normal for this model, not a sign of a dying battery.

Apple vs. a local shop

OptionPriceWhat you get
Apple or Authorized Service Provider$99Genuine battery, shows as genuine in Settings
Apple with AppleCare+$0 under 80%Same genuine part
Independent shopAbout $69 to $109Often faster, usually a non-genuine battery

Apple's $99 sits right in the middle of the shop range, so for most people Apple wins. A non-genuine battery shows as Unknown Part in Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History, and Apple says that can lower trade-in value.

If you do use a shop, ask whether the battery is genuine, how long the warranty is, and whether they reseal the phone. The 16e is rated IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes from the factory, and an opened phone may not keep that.

Is a $99 battery worth it on a 16e?

Yes, once health is under 80%. The 16e has an A18 chip and should get software updates for years. A fresh battery for $99 makes it feel new again, for a sixth of what a new $599 phone costs. If health is still above 85%, hold off and fix the drain instead.

Cracked screen too? See our iPhone 16e screen guide and do both at once.
