The iPhone 16e came out on February 28, 2025, as Apple's $599 entry iPhone. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display with Ceramic Shield on the front and Face ID up top. It's a great value phone, which makes a $229 screen bill sting a little more. Here's how to handle it.

What Apple charges

These are Apple's own US prices for the iPhone 16e.

RepairApple price (no coverage)With AppleCare+
Screen damage$229$29
Screen and back glass damage$319Not listed as a single fee
Back glass damage$159$29
Battery service$99$0 (under 80% health)
Other damage$519$99

Apple uses a genuine display and guarantees its parts and labor for 90 days or the rest of your warranty, whichever is longer. Apple Authorized Service Providers may charge their own price if you pay out of pocket, but AppleCare+ fees are the same wherever you go.

How bad is the damage?

Take a good look before you book anything.

  • Cracked glass, picture and touch work perfectly: Annoying, not urgent. Stick on a screen protector or clear tape so the crack doesn't spread or shed glass.
  • Green or pink lines, black spots, flicker: The OLED layer under the glass is damaged. This tends to get worse, so book soon.
  • Ghost touches: The screen taps things on its own. Fix it fast before it texts your boss a row of random emoji.
  • Black screen, but the phone still rings: The display may be dead while the phone is fine. Back it up through iCloud or a computer first.

What about a cheaper shop screen?

For older iPhones, shops usually offer an aftermarket LCD, an aftermarket OLED, or a genuine screen. For the 16e, we don't have verified shop price ranges, so we won't throw out numbers. Prices vary a lot, and so does quality.

If you go to a shop, ask these before you hand over the phone:

  • Is the screen OLED or LCD? The 16e came with OLED. An LCD replacement is usually dimmer, has grayer blacks and can use more battery.
  • Is it a genuine Apple part? Apple makes genuine parts available through its Self Service Repair program, so a shop can source one if it chooses to.
  • Will True Tone still work afterward?
  • How long is the warranty, and does it cover touch problems?

After any third-party screen swap, check Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. A non-genuine screen shows as Unknown Part, and Apple says that can lower trade-in value.

Face ID after a screen repair

The front camera and Face ID parts sit near the top of the screen. A careful repair leaves them alone, but a rushed one can damage them. If Face ID stops working after a repair, go straight back to the shop. Apple notes that if a genuine part's repair isn't fully finished in its Repair Assistant, the phone shows Finish Repair next to the part, and Face ID may not unlock the phone until it's done.

Apple or a shop?

Go to Apple if you have AppleCare+ ($29 is a gift), if you plan to trade in the phone, or if you just want a genuine screen with no surprises.

Consider a shop if you're paying out of pocket, plan to keep the 16e for years, and the shop can tell you exactly what screen you're getting and how long it's covered.

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. The 16e has a recent A18 chip and plenty of software support left. Spending $229 on a genuine screen beats spending $599 or more on a new phone. If your battery is also fading, read our iPhone 16e battery guide before you book, so you can do both on one trip.
