The iPhone 17e is Apple's budget iPhone for 2026. It went on sale March 11, 2026, starting at $599. It has a 6.1-inch OLED screen and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which Apple says has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. Scratch resistance is nice. It doesn't stop a crack when the phone lands corner-first on a parking lot.
What Apple charges
These are Apple's own US prices for the iPhone 17e.
| Repair | Apple price (no coverage) | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Screen damage | $229 | $29 |
| Screen and back glass damage | $319 | Not listed as a single fee |
| Back glass damage | $159 | $29 |
| Battery service | $99 | $0 (under 80% health) |
| Rear camera damage | $129 | Not listed separately |
| Other damage | $529 | $99 |
Apple installs a genuine display and guarantees its parts and labor for 90 days or the rest of your warranty, whichever is longer. Apple Authorized Service Providers may charge a different out-of-pocket price, but AppleCare+ fees are the same everywhere.
Is $229 a good deal?
For a $599 phone, $229 is a big bite, close to 40% of the price. But compare it with the alternative: buying another phone. A genuine screen from Apple keeps everything working, keeps the part listed as genuine, and doesn't hurt trade-in value.
What about a cheap shop screen?
Shops often offer aftermarket screens for older iPhones in a few grades. For the 17e, we don't have reliable shop price ranges yet, so we won't guess. The phone is only a few months old, and aftermarket screens for brand-new models tend to be scarce and uneven in quality at first.
If a shop does quote you, ask:
- Is it an OLED or an LCD? The 17e came with OLED. An LCD replacement will look dimmer and grayer and usually uses more battery.
- New, refurbished or pulled from another phone?
- Will True Tone still work?
- What's the warranty, in writing?
A non-genuine screen shows up as Unknown Part under Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. Apple says that can lower trade-in value.
Check this before you book a repair
Not every cracked-looking screen needs the same urgency.
- Cracked glass, picture and touch are perfect: Not an emergency. Put on a cheap screen protector or clear tape so it doesn't spread or cut you.
- Lines, flicker, black blobs or ghost touches: The OLED panel underneath is damaged. Book soon, because ghost touches can open apps and send messages on their own.
- Black screen but it still rings or vibrates: The display may be dead while the phone is fine. Back it up to iCloud or a computer before anyone opens it.
Under warranty? Read this
The 17e went on sale in March 2026, so if you bought yours new, it's still inside Apple's one-year limited warranty. That warranty covers defects, not drops. So a screen with dead pixels or touch problems and no crack might be free. A screen you cracked is $229 without AppleCare+.
Also, Apple says on its specs page that liquid damage isn't covered under warranty, even though the 17e is rated IP68 (up to 6 meters for 30 minutes).
Apple or a shop?
Go to Apple if you have AppleCare+, if you want to keep trade-in value, or if you want a genuine screen with no guessing. For a phone this new, that's the safe call.
Consider a shop only if you're paying out of pocket, plan to keep the phone a long time, and the shop clearly tells you what screen it is and how long it's covered.
Is it worth fixing?
Yes. A 17e is a current phone with years of updates ahead of it. Fixing the screen for $229 (or $29) beats buying another $599 phone. If your battery is acting up too, see our iPhone 17e battery guide.
