Back glass is the crack people love to ignore. The phone still works, the screen is fine, so why bother? Because cracked glass keeps spreading, sheds tiny shards, and can let moisture and dust in. On a phone this expensive, it's worth sorting out.

What Apple charges

Apple's US prices for the iPhone 18 Pro, before tax:

RepairApple priceWith AppleCare+
Back glass$159$29
Screen and back glass$419Ask Apple
Rear camera$249Ask Apple
Screen$329$29
Other damage$849$99

The back glass price is the same as it was on the iPhone 17 Pro. The thing to watch is that $849 "other damage" price. If Apple's tech finds a bent frame or damage beyond the glass, the repair can jump from the back glass bucket into that one. Apple says the final price is set after it inspects the phone.

How Apple actually replaces it

Apple published its own repair manual for this part, and it's a real job, not a peel-and-stick swap. In short:

  • Two tiny screws by the USB-C port come out first.
  • The adhesive gets heated, then cut around every edge.
  • The glass lifts off with a suction cup, and a small flex cable underneath gets disconnected.
  • New adhesive goes on, the glass is pressed down in a press, and the screws go back in.

That flex cable is the key detail. The back panel isn't just dumb glass; it plugs into the phone. That's why a careless repair can cause more than a cosmetic problem.

Why shop repairs are tricky right now

On older iPhones, many shops use laser machines to break up and remove the old back glass, then glue on a cheap replacement. On the 18 Pro, that market barely exists yet:

  • Parts are rare. Aftermarket back panels for a phone this new usually take months to show up.
  • Quality varies a lot. A laser machine doesn't guarantee good glass, good adhesive or good work.
  • Water resistance. Any time the phone is opened, the seal can be affected. Ask how they reseal and test it.

Check this before you book

  • Is the camera glass cracked too? That's a separate $249 rear camera repair at Apple. Look closely at the lenses in good light.
  • Is the frame bent? Set the phone on a flat table. If it rocks, mention it. It may change the price.
  • Does MagSafe still charge? Try a wireless charger. If it doesn't work, say so when you check in.
  • Back up the phone. Always, before any repair.

AppleCare+ math

If you bought AppleCare+, back glass damage is $29. That's a very good deal next to $159. If you didn't, you can usually still add it within 60 days of buying the phone, so check your purchase date. AppleCare+ also covers screen damage for $29 and other accidental damage for $99, which is a lot better than $849.

What to ask Apple or the shop

  • Is this priced as back glass only, or could it become "other damage"?
  • Will you check the camera and MagSafe charging after the repair?
  • If there's AppleCare+, can I use mail-in or Express Replacement?

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. At $159 on a phone you just bought, it's an easy call, and at $29 with AppleCare+ it's a no-brainer. Don't let a cracked back slide for months. Cracks spread, and a minor fix can turn into a bigger one. If your screen cracked in the same drop, read our iPhone 18 Pro screen replacement cost guide.
