New phone, first drop, spiderweb crack. It happens to the best of us, usually within the first month. The good news is Apple's screen price for the 18 Pro didn't go up from last year. The less good news is you don't have many cheaper choices yet.

Your three screen options (and why only one is real yet)

On older OLED iPhones, shops offer three tiers of screen. On a phone this new, the cheap tiers mostly don't exist yet.

Why this screen repair is trickier than it looks

iFixit's teardown of the 18 Pro turned up two things worth knowing:

  • Part of Face ID now lives under the screen. The infrared camera sits beneath the display, and Apple hides it by thinning out the pixels above it. That's clever, but it's one more reason to be careful about who swaps your screen.
  • The plastic frame around the display is fragile. iFixit damaged it on three of the four phones it opened. If that frame cracks, the screen may not sit flush, which can hurt water resistance. iFixit says it's too early to know if that's a fluke or a real problem.

Also, most big repairs on this phone start by taking the screen off. So a screen repair done badly can cause trouble somewhere else later.

Before you book a repair

  • Is it just the glass? If the picture looks normal and touch works everywhere, it's cosmetic for now. A tempered glass protector can stop shards from flaking until your appointment.
  • Lines, green tint, black spots or a dead area? The OLED panel itself is damaged. Get it in soon. It usually spreads.
  • Back up first. Apple will ask you to, and it's smart anyway.
  • Check your coverage. Settings > General > About shows if you have AppleCare+.

Questions to ask

If you go to Apple or an authorized provider:

  • Is it the screen only, or will you charge the screen and back glass price?
  • Will the final price change after inspection?
  • Can I use mail-in or Express Replacement with my AppleCare+?

If you go to an independent shop anyway:

  • Is this a new genuine Apple screen, used, or aftermarket?
  • Will Face ID and True Tone work afterward? Can I test them before I pay?
  • What's the warranty, and do you reseal the phone?

Is it worth fixing?

Yes, no question. This is a brand-new phone, and $329 is a fraction of what it cost. With AppleCare+ it's $29. Fix it at Apple, put a case on it and move on with your life. If your back glass took a hit too, see our iPhone 18 Pro back glass repair guide.
