The iPhone Duo is Apple's first folding iPhone, and it changes the screen repair math. Instead of one screen there are two: a 5.4-inch outer screen you use when it's closed, and a 7.6-inch inner screen that folds in half. On top of the inner screen sits a thin plastic-like "cover layer" with a matte nano-texture finish. Each of those is its own repair with its own price.

What Apple charges for each screen

These are Apple's own out-of-warranty prices for the iPhone Duo, plus the AppleCare+ service fees.

DamageApple priceWith AppleCare+
Cover layer (inner screen surface)$49$19
Outer display$379$29
Outer display and back glass$509Not listed as one fee
Back glass$199$29
Inner (folding) display$999$99
Other damage$1,499$99

Yes, the inner screen costs almost a thousand dollars. On a phone that starts at $1,999, a single bad drop while it's open can cost half of what you paid.

What about aftermarket screens?

On a normal OLED iPhone you usually get three choices: a cheap aftermarket LCD, an aftermarket OLED, or a genuine Apple screen. The Duo is brand new (pre-orders open October 16, 2026, and it reaches stores October 23), so there's no aftermarket market for it yet.

Folding screens are also much harder to copy than a flat one. If someone offers you a cheap "iPhone Duo inner screen" this year, be suspicious and ask exactly where the part came from.

The cover layer: the cheap fix most people will need

Here's the part that makes the Duo different. Apple says the inner screen is protected by a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer. Apple's VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, said in an interview that the layer is "actually replaceable."

That matters because folding screens wear on the surface first. Scuffs, a dull patch where your thumb lives, or a crease that looks more obvious over time are often just the cover layer, not the panel underneath. Swapping the layer is $49 at Apple, or $19 with AppleCare+.

How to tell which repair you need

  • Scratches, scuffs or a hazy spot on the inner screen, but the picture is fine: most likely the cover layer. Ask for the $49 cover layer service first.
  • Crease looks deeper than it used to: Apple says the matte finish "minimizes crease visibility" but never says there's no crease. If it bugs you, the cover layer swap may help. If it's a real dent in the panel, that's an inner display repair.
  • Lines, black blobs, flicker or dead touch on the inner screen: the folding panel itself is damaged. That's the $999 repair.
  • Cracked glass on the outside when closed: that's the outer display, $379. Cracks on the back too? $509 for both.
  • Hinge feels gritty, loose or won't open flat: this isn't a screen repair. Expect Apple to quote it as other damage, which is $1,499 without AppleCare+.

Easy things to check first

Before you book a repair, restart the phone. A frozen or flickering inner screen can be software. Clean the screen gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, since smudges on a matte surface can look like scratches. Then open and close it a few times and see if the problem follows the fold or stays in one spot.

What to ask before you pay

  • Is it the cover layer or the display panel? (One is $49, the other is $999.)
  • Will the repair use a genuine Apple part?
  • Is Touch ID in the side button still working after the repair? It should be, since it isn't part of the screen.
  • If you have AppleCare+, does this count as one of your incidents?

Is AppleCare+ worth it on this phone?

On most iPhones it's a coin flip. On the Duo the numbers are lopsided: one inner screen repair without coverage is $999 versus $99 with it, and the cover layer alone is $49 versus $19. That $900 gap on a single inner screen repair is the whole argument for coverage. If you tend to drop phones, compare it with the AppleCare+ price Apple shows when you buy.

Is it worth fixing?

Almost always, yes. Even the $999 inner screen is about half of a new Duo, and a cover layer swap is cheap enough that you should do it as soon as the surface starts looking worn. For battery costs, see our iPhone Duo battery guide.
