The 2022 M2 Air is old enough now that a lot of them are hitting their first real battery slump. The laptop still flies, it just needs the charger more than it used to. Here's how to tell if it's time, and what your options cost.
What it costs
| Option | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple, out of warranty | $159 | Plus tax, and shipping if mailed in |
| Apple with AppleCare+ | $0 | Below 80% capacity |
| Replacement battery part (iFixit) | $119.99 | 52.6 Wh, part only |
| Independent shop | Ask for a quote | Varies a lot by shop |
When the part alone is $119.99 and Apple's whole job is $159, Apple is hard to beat here.
Check your battery in two minutes
Battery health: Open System Settings, click Battery, and look at Battery Health. Apple's support page explains the labels. "Normal" means it's working as expected. "Service Recommended" means it holds noticeably less charge than new, or isn't working right. You can keep using the Mac either way.
Cycle count: Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Hardware > Power. The cycle count is under Battery Information.
Apple lists a maximum cycle count of 1,000 for the M2 MacBook Air and says the battery is designed to keep up to 80% of its original capacity at that point. One cycle is 100% worth of use, so using half the battery on Monday and half on Tuesday counts as one.
- Under about 500 cycles and "Normal": your battery likely isn't the problem.
- Near or past 1,000 cycles: replacement is reasonable.
- "Service Recommended": time to get it looked at, and free with AppleCare+ if under 80%.
Things to try before paying
- Check Activity Monitor's Energy tab. One stuck browser tab or app can drain a healthy battery fast.
- Lower screen brightness. Apple rates this Air for up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing, but that's not at full brightness.
- Update macOS. Battery bugs do get fixed in updates.
- Leave Optimized Battery Charging on. It helps slow long-term wear.
Why DIY is harder than it looks
Apple publishes the official battery procedure for this model, and it's a project. Before the battery even comes out, Apple's steps have you remove the bottom case, the heat sink and the logic board. The heat sink can't be reused, so a new one comes with the battery.
Then you peel adhesive strips, align the new battery with pins, and clamp it in a press. Apple's tool list includes a torque driver with Torx Plus bits, alignment pins and a display press. That's not a kit most people have lying around.
Apple Store, authorized shop or independent?
You have three real choices. An Apple Store or Apple's mail-in service charges the $159 above. Apple Authorized Service Providers use Apple parts too, but Apple's repair page notes they set their own fees for out-of-warranty work, so call and compare. Independent shops can be cheaper or faster, but the part quality varies a lot, so ask the questions below.
Questions to ask a shop
- Is the battery new? What's its capacity? (Apple's spec is 52.6 Wh.)
- Will macOS show the battery health correctly after?
- Do you reuse the old heat sink, or replace it like Apple's procedure says?
- How long is the warranty?
Is it worth replacing?
Almost always. The M2 chip is still plenty quick for everyday work, and $159 brings back most of the all-day battery life that made this laptop popular. If the screen is also damaged, read our MacBook Air M2 cracked screen guide and price both together.
