The 2021 MacBook Pro 14 was the comeback model: real ports, MagSafe, a great screen and the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Five years later, most of them still handle serious work just fine. The battery is the part that usually shows its age first.

Check if you actually need it
- System Settings > Battery, then the info button next to Battery Health, shows Normal or Service Recommended plus your Maximum Capacity.
- Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information > Power to see the Cycle Count.
Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80% of their capacity at 1,000 cycles. If you’re near or past that, or capacity is under 80%, it’s time.
Why $249 is a good deal on this one
Compare what you’d get. The M1 Pro and M1 Max are still faster than a lot of new laptops for real work, the screen is excellent, and it’s still supported by current macOS. $249 brings back all-day battery life on a machine that would cost a lot more to replace with something just as capable.
When to skip it
A battery won’t help if the real problem is something else:
- The screen has lines, spots or cracks (Apple quotes those after inspection, and they’re pricey)
- It’s had a spill
- It’s slow because you need more memory than it has

Apple or a local shop?
Apple’s $249 gets you a genuine battery and Apple’s warranty on the work. Shops can be cheaper, but quality varies a lot. Ask if the battery is new and from a known maker, and what warranty you get. On a laptop that cost this much, a cheap battery isn’t worth saving a few dollars.
Before you hand it over
Back up with Time Machine, write down your login password, and unplug any external drives or docks. If you book Apple’s mail-in service, expect to be without the laptop for a few days, so time it around deadlines.
Protect it going forward
AppleCare+ for Mac makes a cracked screen $99 and other damage $299, and the battery is free once it’s worn out. If your Pro is under four years old, Apple’s AppleCare One plan can cover Macs you already own.
