For years, iPad owners had to guess about battery health. Not anymore. The iPad Air M3 is one of the iPads where Apple shows battery health, cycle count and even the manufacture date right in Settings. That makes the "is it the battery?" question a lot easier.
What Apple charges
| Repair | Apple price | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Battery service (Wi-Fi or Cellular) | $119 | $0 below 80% health |
| Cracked screen or other damage | $529 / $579 | $29 screen, $99 other |
$119 is the same price Apple charges for most current iPad batteries, including the iPad mini A17 Pro and the basic iPad A16.
How to check battery health
Open Settings, tap Battery, then tap Battery Health. Apple lists the iPad Air M3 (along with the M2 and M4 Air, iPad Pro M4 and M5, iPad mini A17 Pro and iPad A16) as models that show this screen. You'll see:
- Battery health status: the simple version. Normal means it's fine.
- Cycle count: one cycle is using 100% of the battery's capacity, even if it's spread over a few days.
- Manufacture date and first use: handy if you bought the iPad used.
Apple says iPad batteries are designed to keep up to 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles. Most people charge an iPad every day or two, so a lot of M3 Airs won't get near 1,000 cycles for years.
How long should it last on a charge?
Apple rates the 11-inch iPad Air M3 at up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or watching video, and up to 9 hours browsing on cellular. That comes from a 28.93 watt-hour battery. If you're getting well under that with light use, and health says Normal, look at software first.
Easy things to try first
- Check what's using power. Settings > Battery shows usage by app. A game or video app running in the background can wreck your day.
- Turn brightness down a notch. The screen is the biggest power user on any iPad.
- Restart. A stuck process after an iPadOS update is a classic cause of sudden drain.
- Check Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps that don't need it.
- Keep it out of heat. A hot car or a sunny windowsill ages a battery faster than anything you do on the screen.
Signs the battery really is worn
- Battery health shows something other than Normal.
- The percentage drops fast in the last 20 or 30%, or the iPad shuts off with charge left.
- It barely lasts a few hours with the same apps that used to get you through a day.
- Swelling: the screen lifting from the frame, or a gap along the edge. Stop charging it and get it checked. That's a safety issue.
Apple or a shop?
Apple may hand you a replacement iPad rather than open yours up, so back up first in case you end up restoring onto a different unit. With AppleCare+ and health under 80%, it's free.
A third-party shop has to remove the fully laminated display to reach the battery, which risks cracking the screen. If a shop quotes much less than $119, ask who pays if the display breaks during the job.
Is it worth replacing?
Usually, yes. $119 for what amounts to a refreshed iPad Air is a good deal on a tablet this new. If the screen is cracked too, read our iPad Air M3 cracked screen guide, since Apple prices those as separate repairs.
