Here’s the annoying part: the regular iPhone 14 is only $159 for the exact same problem. Same year, same basic look. So what gives?
Why the 14 Pro costs so much more
With the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, Apple quietly redesigned the inside so the back glass comes off on its own, held in with screws. Swapping it is easy.
The 14 Pro and Pro Max didn’t get that redesign. Their back glass is glued to the frame. So when Apple fixes a cracked back, it doesn’t just swap the glass. It replaces the whole rear housing and moves your logic board, cameras and screen over. That’s a big job, and you pay for it.
| Model | Apple back glass price | Why |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 | $159 | Back glass comes off on its own |
| iPhone 14 Plus | $159 | Same easy design |
| iPhone 14 Pro | $559 | Glued back, whole housing replaced |
| iPhone 14 Pro Max | $609 | Same, bigger phone |
Your options
1. AppleCare+ ($29). If you have it, this is easy. Check Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty.
2. An independent shop with a laser. Good shops use a laser machine to burn away the glue under the broken glass, then fit new glass on the original frame. It costs much less than Apple’s housing swap. Ask:
- Do you use a laser, or swap the whole housing?
- Is the new glass the right color and does MagSafe still line up?
- What warranty do you give?
3. Leave it (carefully). If it’s a small crack and the phone works fine, some people just slap on a case that covers the back. The glass is part of what holds the phone together, though, so don’t let it get worse.
Don’t forget the camera bump
On the 14 Pro, the camera lenses sit in a raised bump on the back. If the glass over a lens is cracked, that’s a separate camera repair. Apple charges $219 for the rear camera on the 14 Pro. Check your photos for blur or spots before you book.
Keep the new back in one piece
Once it’s fixed, a few cheap habits keep you from paying again:
- Use a case with a raised lip around the camera bump, since that’s where the 14 Pro takes most back hits.
- Check that MagSafe chargers and wallets still snap on straight after a shop repair. If they slide around, the glass isn’t seated right, so take it back under warranty.
- Don’t keep it in a back pocket. Sitting on it flexes the frame, and that’s how a lot of back glass cracks start in the first place.
Is it worth fixing?
If the phone works and the crack isn’t spreading, a shop laser repair is usually worth it, especially since the iPhone 14 Pro still gets updates. At Apple’s $559, it’s closer: that’s a big chunk of what the phone is worth used. Plug your real quote into our repair or replace calculator before you decide.
