If your phone used to last all day and now it’s begging for a charger by lunch, the battery is probably worn out. Good news: it’s the cheapest big repair on an iPhone, and it can make an old phone feel new again.

Do you actually need a new battery?
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If maximum capacity is under 80%, Apple considers it worn out and Settings may suggest service.
Other signs it’s time:
- It shuts off out of nowhere, even with charge left
- It won’t make it through a normal day
- Everything feels slow, especially when it’s cold or the battery is low
- The screen or back is starting to lift away from the frame
When it’s free
- AppleCare+ or AppleCare One: free once your battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity.
- Apple’s one-year warranty: covers a battery that’s actually defective, but not normal wear and tear.
Apple or a local shop?
Local shops are often cheaper, especially for older iPhones, but part quality varies a lot. If a shop puts in a battery that isn’t genuine, your iPhone may call it an unknown part in Settings, and you might lose the battery health reading. Ask before you say yes:
- Is it a genuine Apple battery or aftermarket?
- How long is the warranty?
- Does the price include parts, labor and tax?

Worth it?
Pretty much always, as long as your iPhone still gets iOS updates. A $99 to $129 battery buys you another year or two for way less than a new phone. If the screen is cracked too, add both repairs up and plug them into our repair or replace calculator first.
